i think the answer, in short, is yes.  i know of many video guys using mac pros as their primary video playback device.  this on very high profile corporate gigs.  audio is certainly way easier to work with than video...

of course it never hurts to have a backup, but i've had instant replays take a dump on me mid-show too....
