A friend has asked me to dispose of his monster pile of old PA equipment. Most of this stuff has 20 years use in hireage on it and none of it was top of the line in its time. We're talking quite a heap of Cerwin Vega D32s, L36s, soundcraft spirit live desks, ARX amps, Misc yammy EMX powered desks - several tons of it. Nobody here (of sound mind) would want it. My dilemma. Should I:
(1) make it up into lots of small systems.
(2) make it up into one huge (and awful) system + rats & mice
(3) Sell the components piecemeal
(4) Truck the lot down to the local auction house.
The owner is not too worried about maximising his return, he just wants to reclaim his floorspace.
I don't mind putting in a bit of effort but don't want to become ancientsoundbroker.com
Ideas, folks
Cheers
Mike

If he is not worried about a return on investment-then sell it as a package-at a really low price-to make it attractive.

For more return-sell individually.

Lots of small systems would be hard to sell (I would think).

The problem with an auction house is that the gear itself would take up a lot of space-and unless there is an audio guy guy there who in interested-it would go for nothing-to somebody looking to part it out.

Buy a few kegs of beer, get a couple of good 16 lb. sledge hammers and charge a buck a whack. Invite bikers and sound guys. Smashing fund-raiser party.

Re: Offloading old PA gear

Making it up into smaller systems is probably going to be the best combination of an easy sell and maximum return.

You might well be able to get a little more in total if you were to sell individual items, but there's far more overhead involved. An afternoon spent with a helper going through everything and sorting it out into logical combinations will probably pay off.

How was the gear actually deployed when it was in use?

Your problem is the distance. Selling all that "tons" of equipment in NZ will be a tough and long process. Shipping it to USA or Europe will cost a fortune.
The way i see it you have two options. Sell a package real cheap to someone that will have time and space to store it and sell it piece by piece. This if you want a fast sale.
Other option is selling slowly for more roi.
Owners call if you ask me.
