Has anyone ever installed a line array outside?

I am currently considering getting quotes for a installed line array, and am wondering if that is a sound investment, or would require a lot of maintenance.

Re: Outside Line Array Install

yeah, all the time... as with any speaker, get the weather treated/rated models, and you shouldn't have any maintenance issues.

Whether or not it is a good investment depends on whether or not it is the best approach for a particular job.

Just because it is a "lyin' array" does not automatically make it the best choice.

The maintenance issue depends on the cabinet-how it is used etc. If you are pushing it to the limit-then you may need to repair drivers. If the system is loafing along-the drivers will last much longer.

And BE SURE to get a fully weatherized cabinet AND HARDWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-or they will end up falling apart and possibly hurting somebody.

You should consider the actual needs of the install-the costs involved-etc. And HIGHLY consider what happens to the sound when the wind blows. Not so much a big deal inside-but outside it can make all the difference between a system that works and one that people complain about.

Re: Outside Line Array Install

By outdoors do you mean in place and totally exposed 24/7/365 or more seasonal use or under partial cover or some other condition? Is this in Arizona or on the coast or in Alaska? Theoretically, provided all the devices and hardware are available in weatherized versions and properly selected for the application then a line array should be no different from any other array or devices.

Re: Outside Line Array Install

It would be an installed D&B Vi-series or Turbosound Flashline Mini system that, while is under the roof of a building, is at the edge. The subwoofers would also be enclosed under a porch/stage style setup, so I will need to make sure that there is sitting water near them that could rot the wood...

Interestingly enough, Brad, it would be in Atlanta.

Even long term moisture will find its way into the wood and start to rot it. I would contact the manufacturer FIRST and ask them what they think about having that particular product outside long term.

Do they have a weatherproof option? such as fiberglassing the entire inside and outside?

Is the standard hardware made out of a weather resistant material-such as stainless steel? Even painted water can find its way in.

Water can find its way into all kinds of places.

It sounds more like a manufacturer question than a question for a forum.

Where in Atlanta? A popular "natural" site here has an installed line array and every time I hear it there are pieces of it not working or on the edge of failure. And the rig is installed under a partial hanging cover. Top, back, and two sides

I have installed a Turbosound FlexArray (which would be the closest to the D&B V-series???) outside on the east coast, and its done very well. It is the special weatherised version of the product, and is only outside for ~4 months a year but looks brand new after the season.

(disclaimer - I used to work for Turbo directly before now working for the sales company mentioned above, let us know if we can help with your project)

If you are in GA, just call Danley.
Not if you "must" have a line array.

Yes there are MANY people out there that INSIST on a line array-(it doesn't matter which one-as long as it is a "line array") no matter if that is the proper tool for the job or not. :( They just GOTTA HAVE a line array in their venue-because it will make them "feel" better. OH WELL----------------------------
