Plasma Speaker?

Re: Plasma Speaker?

I have always wanted to build one since I heard about them some 30yrs ago. I just have never gotten the time. I have several schematics/versions that I have found.

I was under the impression they were pretty much HF devices and supposed to sound pretty good-but limited on loudness.

Re: Plasma Speaker?

I remember reading about a production model plasma speaker in the late 70's in Stereo Review magazine. It was used just for the high frequency and they used a gas to envelope the arc and contacts to keep them from burning away. Given enough time to look through all my old Stereo Review's I could find the article! Yes I really do still have years of them along with a good collection of DB magazines.
From what I heard on the video I was surprised there was even that much mid range.

Hello,

I'm thinking that Video clip's Audio portion was somehow "enhanced". I've heard a demonstration of this plasma effect back in the 1970's and it sounded high-end-y and with a lot of snap, crackle and pops...like rice crispies. Nothing usable to this idea...yet.

I guess that was the plasma tweeter MP-02 from Magnat.
It was used on the MP-X-066 an MP-X088 speakers.

Although in german, there are some pictures on this page:

Re: Plasma Speaker?

I've seen a couple schematics where it was a audio modulated PWM circuit driving a MOFSET pair driving a flyback. Supposedly this generated a 5-7 Kv continuous arc. I saw something of diyaudio about restoring an old Ionovac plasma tweeter, and it used a similar circuit, but without mofsets or prefabbed flybacks. It had the arc in the throat of a horn.

Re: Plasma Speaker?

I am picturing a row of nails, like they were driven straight out of a sleeve of nail gun holder,
then 'nuther row right next to them. With this arc between every set of nails.
Plasma Line Array. You heard (of) it here first.
