Building a new house. The window supplier quoted these as our soundproof window option

Option A
10mm glass
Option B
9.52mm laminated glass (1.52mm PVB sandwiched by 4mm heat strenghted glass)
Option C
22mm clear glass w/ airspace (2x 6mm clear glass with 9mm airspace in between)

which is the best and why? thank you

Joseph,

I'm sure there are some studio guys and perhaps a couple of acousticians around here someone.

For what it's worth, given a layman's understanding of soundproofing, I'd say Option C is your best bet. The two biggest things that go into soundproofing are adding mass to the barrier and decoupling each side of the barrier from each other. The airspace and heavy glass does that. However, the difference is negligible between the sound absorption of Options B and C so which ever one is more cost effective should be your choice. However, you should be more concerned with how the windows are installed as well as how the walls themselves are built. The windows themselves are usually more effective at blocking sound than the stud walls they are installed in.

All in all - be more concerned with the sealing of the windows than the windows themselves, as well as that the walls are soundproofed properly. If it's a SERIOUS concern for you, consider hiring an acoustician to consult on the project.

Re: please help me select the better soundproof window

A tidbit about sound proofing studio windows is that the two panes are angled apart to reduce acoustic coupling between the two panes.

I seriously doubt you are interested in that much cost and effort.

Most premium window manufacturers will probably measure and publish noise isolation performance for their glass windows.

I would suggest going to gearslutz.com forums and looking in their acoustics/studio building forum. There is a wealth of resources there, including guys like Rod Gervais who is a renowned studio design consultant. They are extremely helpful and it is an amazing resource.
