I prefer these:

Actually the ones I have now are a handmade pair from northern Sweden.  I wore out my store-bought ones.  They were plain leather and the Swedish ones are moose hide.

The curled toe was of course to slip into the binding of cross country skis, but the design has the added benefit of trapping a lot of air.  A very comfortable boot and the fact that they are roomy means that any warm socks you wear do not get crushed by a modern, close fitting style.  I've worn mine for 6-8 hours at -30 with minimal activity and my feet stayed quite comfortable.

For the rest of the body:  layers, starting with Duofold long-johns.

If you want a plug-in electric heater we've always use these:

Generic name is ''milk house'' heater.  Available at most hardware stores.
