Re: Powered Mixer with powered speakers?

I'll tell you one thing. It's lame to drag around the heft of a powered mixer when you don't need to. I know someone who had an older powered mixer that weighed 40 lb. who didn't use the built in amps. My vote is to get a regular mixer and forgo the dead weight.

With powered speakers you can use a simple unpowered mixer.

With a powered mixer, you use unpowered speakers.

With an unpowered mixer and unpowered speakers, you must have a separate power amp in between.

I the old days we had mixers and speakers and power amps, and that was good...

Then engineers started building power amps into the mixers, so you could connect the speakers directly to the powered mixer, without an amp.

But other engineers decided it would be nice to build the power amp into the speakers, so they could hook the mixer directly to the powered speaker.

So a powered mixer and a powered speaker has one too many power amps. You may be able to connect them together (carefully bypassing one of the amps), but you have more rig than you can use at the same time.

It depends on what mixer model. Some have line outputs others do not.

Model numbers make all the difference.
Do you know if a MACKIE 1402 VLZ- PRO is powered or not? I'm a drummer trying to put together a rehersal space so please forgive my ignorance!
