Powered Sub...

Re: Powered Sub...

Hey guys,

Did some searching around here, and really didn't find what I was looking for. Im looking for a nice powered sub 18" to be used as a drum sub. Whats good? Whats bad? Thanks!

I've used the ADR single 18" before on drumfll. It sounds good, has a decent amount of power, and is reasonable to carry around and handle. The only downside is its a little on the expensive side. If this is a budget system, I always favored the older Mackie self powered subs. They had a fairly pleasing tone for drumfill.

The VRX self powered sub always sounded boomy to me, but that is one option. I've also seen good deals on used JBL VP series powered subs on eBay. I don't know how they sound really, but they are a pro level box and a nice form factor. That's all I can think of at the moment.

Re: Powered Sub...

The Yorkville LS701P would be another one to consider.

I don't think a dual 10 would keep up with Scotts demands... I've run into the 701 in a small pub club here. We are a 4 piece band , and all electronic (direct inputs)... It doesn't like when we come in to play... even though I make sure it's only kick/bass, and a bit of my toms go through it...

I've also seen a VTC sub get brought in for drum fill.

I've heard the QSC once in a fairly large ballroom supporting an act on FOH duty... it was pretty rockin.

I think the KW181 is a great option because of it's output/size, and it's nice height to put a drum fill on upright.

I have used the ELX118P with good results in the budget camp. For it's price/size/weight it's a nice option in the bar scene or less demanding applications. It limits kinda quickly (compared to powered tops linked to it). So it's really just a good choice if price and weight are priorities.

I have an LS800p that I love, especially for DJ rentals, but wouldn't use it for drum fills in my application. It's size & weight just don't seem appropriate for that purpose to me. The NX720P would probably be good.

The JBL PRX618xlf has been described as a nice performer as well. I have yet to find out for myself.

Re: Powered Sub...

quick disclaimer, I forgot I was in varsity when I posted that... so if I didn't make it clear those are for the "if you're looking for around $1000 or less" grouping.

Re: Powered Sub...

Thanks for all the replies! Really leaning towards the Yorkville, the new one that replaces the LS800p. If anyone has any more comments I would love to hear them!

Hi Scott,

The LS801P is definitely a boomer and good value for the money, however for a drum sub, it's probably a bit large and cumbersome. I'm currently looking at the FBT Mitus 118SA for our similar needs. It's small, packs a decent punch, and has a reasonable price point. FBT Elettronica S.p.a - 1200W - 139dB SPL Processed Active Subwoofer
