From my shallow reading of various articles on the web, it sounds like fusion is going to be the final answer to pretty much all of our power concerns: longevity, safety (both short term and long term), geographic diversity. Seems that those of us who favor nuclear power over fossil fuels should be pushing for a rapid expansion of the R&D of fusion power reactors over fission.
