Hi,

I'm Mark from the Philippines and i am planning to change/upgrade (if i could call it that) my Recording Studio Gear.

I'm currently using the following:

M-Audio Projectmix I/O
ART Digital MPA II pre

I am considering replacing the Projectmix for an X32 Compact or the X32 Rack + X-Touch.

The X32 Rack + X-Touch will be more practical (budget wise) because it's cheaper than the X32 Compact (at least in our country), Is this going to be a good replacement setup that will serve me for years (like the Projectmix does)?

The Projectmix is still working fine for me (one of the preamps generates noise already, but it doesn't really bother me because i am using the ART Digital MPA II as a preamp then i just send the signal to the projectmix via spdif) but without and hardware/software support i feel like it deserves to have a replacement unit already.

Which one would you suggest that i buy? Will i still be able to connect the ART Pre to the X32 (Rack or Compact)? given the price range of these behringer products, if incase you don't like what they're offering can you suggest other/better stuff to get within the same price range?

Thanks in advanced.

Re: Recording Studio Gear Replacement (Behringer X32)

Dear Mark,
The X32 family is a great choice for studio applications, with 32x32 USB audio interfaces and MIDAS designed mic preamps. Connection is easy with downloadable drivers for PC, and plug-in-play Core Audio operation on Mac OSX.

Both the X-TOUCH and X32 COMPACT will provide you with similar control for your software (Mackie & HUI support). The X-TOUCH adds more control with touch sensitivity, transport control, and 92 dedicated buttons. X32 COMPACT will allow you to use the right side of the console (8 output faders and associated mute, solo, select, metering, scribble strips), as well as your assignable buttons for control.

For connecting your ART preamp, you would need to come out of its analog output into the X32. You can do so either through XLR, as these inputs can accept line level signals, or you can bypass the preamp circuit by using 2 of the 6 balanced AUX TRS inputs.

Hope it helps!

I also have a Project Mix. Still working just fine with PT11. I've thought about the dual purpose use of a digital mixer in the project studio although patching it in and out sounds like more trouble than it may be worth. Currently I have all the mic and line inputs connected to a patch panel that is also hooked to all my outboard and a snake across the room where the drumset is. That's 16 connectors (plus 4 outputs) to pull and put back each time I want to use the board.

The only real reason would be to get more physical faders for mixing instead of paging back and forth across the 8. Or have better pres. The M-Audio pres are clean and fine. I have some GAP73s and others along with various outboard for color. I would expect a good modern digital mixer to have pres that are better than the M-Audio but Neve and API clones are so easy to come by these days that I wouldn't do the switch for pres alone. Maybe something with better scribble strips.

Plus, it's nice having dedicated transport buttons. While you could map things from a digital board, there's something about the standard arrows and a jog wheel that just takes less thought and is more intuitive.

Thanks for the info John, is it possible to connect a footswitch or control the talkback function of the x32 rack via the x-touch? Also is it possible to connect 2 pairs of monitors on it and have the option to select which pair to use (A/B)?

I Can't edit my post and i don't know why

Just have a few more questions:
is it possible to connect a footswitch or control the talkback function of the x32 rack via the x-touch?
can i connect 2 pairs of monitors on it and have the option to select which pair to use (A/B)?
will the future OSX EL CAPITAN be supported by behringer (drivers etc..)?
which one is a better connection X-touch to Xrack then X32 Racj to Macpro, or X-Touch to MacPro and X32 Rack to Macpro both via USB?
