Hi Guy's , I have recently bought a set of 15'' Carvin LS Series Speakers and I am needing to change the Top hat in them so that it will be better to take them off the stands , They are getting stuck on the stand due to the grooves inside the Top Hat mount on the speakers . I bought a pair of metal ones and put them on and they were wobbly, so i took them off and I was wondering if i got some different maybe deeper ones will they work better , But my main concern is it touching the back of the speaker? The ones i have are 3 1/4 inches and i am possibly looking at getting the 5 inch. What do you guys think will it help without any problems?

Re: Replacing Plastic Top hat for speaker stands

Wobbly typically means someting is the wrong diameter. Note that there are multiple diameters of poles and tophats.

When i Put the speaker with the Replacement Tophat on it , It is wobbly, It's smaller than my original plastic one that i have on there now, I am am just needing to get a bigger one i feel like , but i am afraid that if i get the 5" tophat that it might touch the back of the speaker and possibly cause some rattle from vibration or damage to the speaker its self if i installed it. I feel like that with the replacement tophat its not going down on the pole far enough to satisfy me.

Your courses of action seem clear. Either:

- Take apart one of your speakers and see if 5" will hit something
- Measure your poles and order a socket that is a better fit than what you have.

can i just sad the grooves out of the inside of the original tophat ? Would that work also?

Smaller in what dimension? Remember, the purpose of the ribs in your old top hats is to reduce the effective diameter of the hole.

I am talking about the deepness of the top hat. I measured the replacement ones today and they are not even 3 3/4 inch. instead they are about 2 inches. I don't really mind some wobbling but the speakers with the replacement top hats don't seem to go down far enough on the stand to secure it. which then that brings on more of wobbling.

Here is basically the whole world of speaker top hats on one page:

http://www.parts-express.com/cat/speaker-top-hats-pole-sockets/3462

First, measure the diameter of the top of your stands-it's either 1.375" or 1.50" diameter(roughly).

Choose a matching tophat from that page at Parts express that has the same diameter. I use the steel ones from Penn Fab, they work great, but this depends on the speaker cabinet recess, cutout, and Tee-nut spacing.

Post up some photos, and I can tell you.

Don't waste time sanding.

Best regards,

John

But I am wondering if this one would work better for me.

I checked my Diameter on the stand itself and the the top hat and Both are 1 3/8 . so I know that its the right diameter.

Go with the shorter one, it's the usual one for tops.

The shorter one is the one i have , It was really wobbly like it was fixing to fall off the stand when i put it on the speaker. I stuck a ruler down in the bottom of it and It wasn't even close to what i ordered, the socket depth says 3" but this one was about 2 1/4" . They dont have them there in that size. I got it for a 1 3/8 " Diameter.
