Re: Rig rundown Interview with John McLaughlin
Interestingly, the last time I heard McLaughlin live, I didn't care for his tone at all. (Although his playing wasn't too bad.)
Between his use of a wireless guitar rig, in addition to his using a straight input to the PA instead of stage amp, the sound was clear, but the tonal texture was pretty blah. I suppose if you've been playing as long as he has, convenience becomes more and more important, and I'm sure he doesn't have a large crew traveling with him.
It was still thrilling to see and hear the master musician play, but his guitar tone wasn't nearly as spot-on as, say, Bill Frisell's was with his Tele and little Fender Princeton amp. Now THAT's a good live guitar sound.
