RIP Harry Morgan

Re: RIP Harry Morgan

The world is a sadder place with his passing. One of the greats! His ability to play both a high ranking officer officer, while being silly, and also being compassionate was just terrific. I can't imagine anyone else bringing that character to life. He played one of the most memorable characters to ever be on TV. RIP with my respect and gratitude for the years of laughter.

Re: RIP Harry Morgan

IIRC on MASH he first did a guest spot a crazy general (Steele), and apparently impressed them enough, for them to bring him back later as a regular. I wonder if they dropped that episode from heavy rotation as it would surely be confusing out of sequence.

Re: RIP Harry Morgan

My first memory of him was from the movie "What Did You Do In the War, Daddy?" where his character fell into the catacombs in Rome during WWII. As chaos reigned on the streets he would occasionally pop up through a man-hole or some such egress and fire off a line. His spots became progressively more bizarre, ending finally in his going totally mad and dressed in full gladiator regalia.

Coincidence?????

His character in the movie was "Major Pott". I wonder if he brought that to MASH or if Larry Gelbart got it from Blake Edwards and the other screenwriters.

That movie was the very first thing I ordered off of the internet!

I remembered it as a kid and wanted to see it again as an adult.

I always enjoyed his acting. RIP

Re: RIP Harry Morgan

I liked him a lot too. Sadly he wasn't without his faults. He was a wife beater.

I didn't know that, that's too bad... Of course she has her faults too (she is human too and of course nobody is perfect), and it takes two to tango... Still too bad that he couldn't control himself.

In addition, I remember seeing him as a guest on one of the Westerns in the 60's. His role was a crazy old mountaineer with a huge beard and a lot of nervous energy, who just coincidentally had a pretty young daughter that one of the main stars were interested in. Bonanza perhaps?

That is an interesting episode to see. It occurred before he was a regular on the show, but it is still a point of interest in the series as that was his unintended audition for his permanent part. It is funny to see him line everyone up outside (presumably for inspection) and act like he doesn't know any of them. A much different character than Colonel Potter. :)
