I worked a benefit concert once where he showed up rather disoriented and unprepared looking.

Immediately before going on stage he borrowed my associate's cowboy hat and proceeded to improvise, using the hat as his sole prop, for 15 absolutely side-splitting minutes.

RIP, you nutty guy.

Jonathan Winters was always one of my inspirations for "taking it to the audience" type performance. And a comfort to know that it's OK to be more than a little nuts and that it's human to sometimes carry it into your personal life and go a bit over the edge. He always seemed to come back, though, and the under-current of melancholy he tapped was much like Chaplin's little tramp.

We need more like him....

Is it me or was half of that scene not actually Mr Winters but a stuntman?
