For small items that won't be jammed under 800lbs of stuff in a truck, 1/4" cases can be significantly lighter and perfectly adequate. The last few cases I've had made were done with corrugated plastic instead of wood - the weight savings is significant, however it's not as strong as the plywood, so only works up to a certain size. My GLD80 surface in a lift-off non-doghouse case weighs about 60lbs total. If that were done with 3/8" ply, just the case would weigh probably 45lbs.
