I am looking at getting a home theater with real surround sound installed in my bedroom in the future and i was just wondering if it would be ok if i put the sub woofer under my bed where i would be watching the TV mostly. Would this be ok or not? If this isn't ok could you guys recommend some good places to put it in my room? Thanks for reading and i hope to hear your response below:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Re: Some questions about a home theater.

You would get a better response putting your subwoofer in your bed. That way it would keep warm and you could give it cuddles so it doesn't get lonely.

I think this should be a job for a design specialist. We would really need to know the specs of the speaker , how you plan on powering it, the dimensions of the room, the flexibility and reflectivity indices of the walls, ceiling, and floor, the size and model of the bed , and the color of your bedding and window treatments.

Really, I would put it on a 25 foot cable and push it around until it sounds good.

The window treatments? You're SO thorough, Jay!

Re: Some questions about a home theater.

That would be fine-but the issue might be getting a sub with the performance you want that will fit under the bed.

Home theaters come in all shapes and sizes and levels of performance.

We have one customer who has one in his bedroom and uses 2 of the DTS10 subs.

DTS10 | Danley Sounds Labs | Danley Sound Labs, Inc.

1 is usually overkill for most regular home theaters-but some of these guys are a bit on the "insane"side when it comes to subs. 40-50Kw of power is not all that unusual for power for a home theater sub.

We have another guy who has a small (12'x14') bedroom that has a Danley BC412 on either side of the bed-because he wants lots of "impact" and punch.

BC412 | Danley Sound Labs, Inc.

So the usual answer is "it depends".

Suggestions about where to put it in your room REALLY depend on what the room looks like. Not all bedrooms are the same.

He has two BC412s for his home theater… might as well have hired a professional installer to spec, design, build, and support it from scratch for the money. It's a 12'x14' room after all.

He wanted 2 BC415s but could not get them around a corner in his house to get to the bedroom---------------------

To say he likes it loud is an understatement-------

Since small room acoustics can be so "fickle" especially on the low freq-here is a "backwards test" to try.

Put the sub in the primary listening position. Then YOU walk/crawl around the room until you get the response/sound you like the best.

This is easier with a mic as you can see the response on the screen.

Then put the sub where you found the best response.

Localization is not usually a big deal when crossed over low.

HOWEVER my own experience is slightly different.

In my HT I have the prototype Danley DTS20. I originally had it in a corner behind the primary couch. My full range speakers are some that I built a couple of decades ago and they are good down fairly low with a 12" woofer.

I found it a bit "odd feeling" with the sub low passed at 80Hz. All I had back then. It just didn't "mesh" the way I would like.

So I moved it to the front of the room-chopped up my TV stand to fit around it (it is lying on the floor across the front) and like it much better.

The rear location would probably have worked better with a lower low pass-but I don't feel like moving things around to try.

Re: Some questions about a home theater.

Andrew,

That's the exact system I bought a couple of weeks ago.
It does the job.

The sub is very capable. I have mine in a corner and have to have it set a couple of dB down from the rest of the system.
The only other change I've had to make is to raise the level of the center speaker by around 4dB, as speech can very quiet compared to everything else, even in Night Mode.

One great feature is the audio/video sync setting. You can manually vary the audio to video sync by up to half a second or so, in small increments.
No more out of sync movies!

I got this one because it's fairly small, the player is flat (a lot of players aren't meaning you can't put anything on top of them), and it will play SACDs.
It may be a dying format (you could argue that it never quite got the life it deserved), but it seems that only the Sony stuff will play it nowadays. Now I can listen to the re-hashed Genesis box sets, Dark Side Of The Moon, War Of The Worlds, 101, etc in full surround mode.

Enjoy.

Karl.

Karl, is that the Jeff Wayne "War"?

Re: Some questions about a home theater.

Bolt a butt shaker (like drummers use) to the bed frame...

A bedroom system doesn't need to be that HIFI but you may want to move the bed to get rear speakers well behind you... You can add some delay to the rear speakers to make them appear further away. but if they are close you will hear noise coming from them that can ruin the illusion.

I would try low key (cheap) and you should get some real improvement without irritating the wife** too much.

JR

** caveat I am only speculating about what irritates wives.. I suspect movie selections may have a significant effect too.

I used to have a vibrator on my waterbed------------------

You might be surprised at the sound system quality that some people have in their bedrooms. Some of it is very good.

And then others are just basic sound. It depends.
