Something the other blond country singer can only watch and hope...

Re: Something the other blond country singer can only watch and hope...

Very good performance. Carrie could teach a lot of these young blonde singers a thing or two.

It would be a real treat to have Vince summon his guitar tech to the stage to perform.

Watching Vince do some tasty picking is just gravy. Pretty sure Elvis took note too.

Carrie really nailed it.

John,

How did you make it through this video with the HORRIBLE pumping artifacts? The whole mix just shrinks to nothing on the very first kick hit, and the release time modulates the rest of the song in most musically unfortunate ways after everyb kick hit.

To all the newbies who want to know what pumping sounds like, listen to this clip. If you can't here the mix disappear on ever kick hit, and the slowly and strangely reappear, then you should probably stick to the lighting forum...

As as PS, I've never understood Ms. Swift in light of Carrie. Carrie sings so much better and, at least to my tastes, is much more attractive than the younger starlet. Carrie's post American Idol record "Some Hearts" is a clinic on almost every sonic aspect of the modern "pop country" genre.

Re: HORRIBLE pumping...

Hello Phil,

I didn't listen to the whole video, but, there were only the vocals, steel guitar, HH, and piano for the first minute or so. Then, the rest of the group worked their way into the song. There's definitely some compression level setting problems, but, I'm thinking it was not recorded that way, but uploaded to the web that way.

I'm sure Mr. Haliburton's post was more concerned with the vocals, and lack of overwhelming processing, as I was, when I read his post.

Cheers,
Hammer

I listened to this video on another computer, directly from the Web, and it sounded different....better

Re: the pumping-I just plain ignored it as best I could. It would be great if there were a pristine version of this somewhere.

As to Ms. Underwood's singing and choice of song-it really does make a difference what you choose to perform. This could be a paradigm shift in her career. It should be an eye opener for any up and comers, "required reading" as it were. She nailed that classic gospel song like no one else since the man from Tupelo performed it years ago, in front of her peers no less, not a Vegas showroom crowd.

Best regards,

John

Re: HORRIBLE pumping...

If by "lack of overwhelming processing" you mean "no autotune" I agree, but whoever did the dynamics settings on this (both her vocal and the overall mix) could learn a little restraint. The pumping feels like leaving a tunnel in a train.

Re: HORRIBLE pumping...

This was a case where I barely gave a thought to how it sounded, I was too focused on the performance to care. When I heard it the first time it was just through crappy built in tv speakers (the original broadcast), and to be honest, when I was watching, sound quality didn't even matter.

That was a really stellar performance in many ways... to a level that is so rarely seen. I'm not a country music fan, but nevertheless can enjoy a brilliant performance regardless of genre. This is one of those.

Sounded like the rig at Cowboys, till I hit bypass.

Re: HORRIBLE pumping...

Carrie Underwood is a rare talent. She's both a great singer and beautiful as well. I'm not sure why some have to denigrate " the other blonde singer " in the process. Two completely different singers.Like trying to compare Frank Sinatra to Mick Jagger,Arteha Franklin to Cindy Lauper or The Beatles to the Archies. Two thoughts did come to mind while watching this video. First, I am amazed at how Vince Gill could concentrate on playing while standing next to such a beauty.he's in a league of his own too. Second,Ms Underwood never wood have gotten a standing ovation in Hollywood for singing a song about praising the Lord.

Re: HORRIBLE pumping...

Yes, Vince is good here, but he could have done that in his sleep. To appreciate the mastery of Mr. Gill, you have to catch him slaying a hot honkytonkin' barnburner—a slow hymn just doesn't showcase his prowess.

Carrie has grown into an A-List country performer who can hold her own with anyone in that room, including the Judds (who have been known to croon a gospel tune or two). As has already been mentioned, she is completely different from Taylor ("Beatles to the Archies" might be a tad harsh, though).

And yes, the pumping (along with the level wandering and overall mix) goes beyond horrible to atrocious! Haven't heard anything so bad this side of an old-time AM radio station!

Sorry, but I disagree, and I won't be the only one. Ms. Swift has shown herself to be unable to sing in tune on more than one occasion, her range and vocal quality are nowhere near the same as Ms. Underwood. Frankly, IMO, she is not as pretty, but that's subjective, nor relevant-Susan Boyle can get the same reaction out of a crowd.

My praise had little to do with the actual content of the song-frankly, I could care less. It is a good, well written song with a long track record as a classic of the genre, period. And actually, I'd bet money that that performance would have garnished the same reaction in LA, no problem.

Best regards,

John
