Soundcraft SIEX1 help

Re: Soundcraft SIEX1 help

Exactly. I just got the Si Exp 3 and it rocks!

All right! I just had a Facebook question about exactly this! What information does that statement deliver?
I just glanced through the manual.
No DCA's
No full 4 band EQ on inputs
No included recording interface
No side chain comps
No scribble strips

How exactly does that "Rock?"
Not being a wise ass, just curious as to all of the above...

John,

No offense taken...

I guess it depends upon your application space.

Background: I am a weekend warrior (SR is not my primary job) and my primary use is for a live bands with occasional recording. I needed at a board with least 24 channels, six stereo auxes for wireless IEMs (this was one of key requirements), and flexibility in routing. I also wanted on-board EQ (four band parametric would have been nice but two band parametric with high and low shelf is good enough for me), effects, graphic EQ, and the ability to add a digital snake in the future. I was looking hard at the Behringer X32, the Presonus 24 or 32 AI, and the Soundcraft Expression 2 or 3. I liked the features of X32, but just could not do it due to bad experiences I have had with Behringer in the past (even though the features of the X32 are the best). I liked the Presonus and the ease at which one could record. A couple of things caused me to dislike the Presonus: Their price point was too high compared to the features in their products (I already have a DAW and software) and my friend had one crap out in the middle of an important gig (once it was reset, it was OK but this has been a periodic problem). I have had great experiences in the past with Soundcraft analog boards and believe they are the most reliable of the choices. However, I did not like the high list price, the need to add an expansion board for recording, and the cheesy iPad application. In late November, I found that the Expression price was reduced by $500 and the interface card was $400. This was the straw that broke the camels back for me, so I purchase the Si Expression 3. Subsequently, the iPad application was updated which was a big improvement. Maybe not as slick as the Presonus, but quite functional. Having 14 aux sends (6 of which are stereo), 4 matrix mixes, 4 stereo effects busses, and a LR and Mono bus each with 28 band EQ, HPF, gate, compressor, and 2 band parametric/2 shelf EQ is pretty cool. I probably could have been happy with any of the above, but choose the Soundcraft and I am very pleased so far.

Specific responses to your question:
No DCA's - not a big deal for me - can create sub mixes as post fade aux sends
No full 4 band EQ on inputs - true
No included recording interface - added for $400
No side chain comps - true
No scribble strips - Use white tape and can name channels displayed on iPad app and on screen when channel is selected

Re: Soundcraft SIEX1 help

There is no routing flexibility. Try to patch main L to output 2 and main R to output 4 at the same time, while making outputs 5, 6, 7 all main L. Or any combination like that.

Good luck....

Sent from my SCH-I545

Silas,

It is possible to achieve the same functionality using two of the four matrix busses:

Matrix 1 Output Patch 1: Left to Output 2 and Right to Output 4
Matrix 1 Output Patch 2: Left to Output 5 and Right to Unused
Matrix 2 Output Patch 1: Left to Output 6 and Right to Unused
Matrix 2 Output Patch 2: Left to Output 7 and Right to Unused

Simply set the LR contribution to each matrix at unity.

In my application, I would probably not need this, but in diverse environments I can imagine you would.

I know the Expression does not have all of the capabilities of more expensive digital boards.

I see your points about the limited flexibility:

- L and R (stereo pair) have to go to two adjacent outputs.
- You can have at most 2 output patches per bus (mono or stereo).

Your question forced me to learn more about my board. Thanks!

Wow... I continue to be amazed at what digital boards can do. I just started recording my band with my Si Expression 3 and then experimenting with the virtual sound check capability. I can now try different gate/compressor/EQ settings to refine the initial main mix settings without having to use a ADAT. Very cool.... For those considering the Soundcraft Multi-Digital card, I posted an initial review on Facebook:
