Soundgrid Server

Re: Soundgrid Server

Anyone using a Soundgrid Server live and can comment on reliability?

I'm using a Soungrid MGO for recording/playback and it's been rock solid so far. It's tempting to test a server and some plugins.

When its working it has never had an issue. The owner had a hell of a time getting it to work properly with his Digico's.... not sure if thats isolated or not, but after several long arduous support phonecalls it seems to all be working fine.

Re: Soundgrid Server

Its a very stable machine.

Essentially, its just a tiny linux OS with the waves processing software on board. You can easily roll-your-own if you get the image from Waves.

If you are concerned though, get 2 and run a redundant one (you can do that from within Multirack).

I would have thought that the MGB and switch are more concerning points of failure

Re: Soundgrid Server

I'm using Waves with SG servers one year ago touring around the world, sometimes with Server One and sometimes with Impact, and never had an issue with the servers.

Now I'm using a setup of Digico Sd10, MGB (1 port for plugins with multirack and 1 port for Recording), 1 Server One and a redundant impact server that never has been activated. I'm running multirack on a mac mini and recording multitrack on a PC running W7 and Reaper.

The only issues I had was some bad madi cables that were causing losing sync to waves, and the firsts setups are not as intuitive as plug&play, and nowadays I'm very happy and confortable with them

Re: Soundgrid Server

Obvioulsy Waves only support their own servers.

But they aren't using any esoteric hardware, these are just plain vanilla off-the-shelf PC components. So if you have a modicum of computer know how, you can quite easily end up with a perfectly stable system in a form factor to suit you.

Main and backup sever inside 1u? sure...

Re: Soundgrid Server

I doubt very much that you can make your own SG server. SG Serveres are really simple dedicated PCs but Waves will never, for obvious reasons, give you the software/firmware needed to use a "home made" machine within a SG network and make it work with all the rest of the Soundgrid hardware.

You can certainly make a very good, very stable machine to run Multirack Native, but that's a different animal altogether. No multitrack recording, no very low latency plugins, less plugin count, no redundancy...
So for me is a no brainer. The HW is not that expensive and gives you tons of possibilities, and Waves is expanding features all the time, all compatible only within a SoundGrid network... and the servers are rock solid.

It has been suggested to me the majority of credit for the low latency you get with the server is due to a hardware "waves accelerator" along the lines of the "dante accelerator" Yamaha and another I do not recall, are manufacturing. Has anyone had the SG server open to see what the NIC is attached to? Is there a hardware IP to digital audio convertor of some kind that would eliminate the need for software conversion? The dante accelerator offers redundancy and lower latency compared to DVS.
