Spiritual father of "The Wall of Sound" is dead

Augustus Owsley-Stanley, aka "Bear" has died in a car crash in Australia.

The linked story doesn't mention anything of his audio guy period.

He was more famous as an "underground chemist" but I knew him better as someone who always wanted to try something new to make the band SOUND better.

He was also a world class curmudgeon

Sad day indeed. Makes me want to crank up a ole hard truckers cab till the JBL's peel the paint off the walls.

I was pleased to read in one obit where Owsley enjoyed a good income from his earlier recordings of the Grateful Dead in the decades after his revolutionary audio and psychonautics work with them. What an unconventional guy, right down to his diet.
