I have a SRX 728/715 combo. I have a couple clients concerned with the tops not keeping up with the subs. Im looking at the purchase of another top cabinet. Considering another pair of 715s possibly the 725s or another brand used cabinet that has some more output. Not sure if a EAW KF650z would be an upgrade or sidestep. Pricing is definitely a consideration. Im not sure if I got another set of 715 how I would configure. I have been mounting the single pair on some global truss 132s to get them up high.

What about a pair of PRX735's or SRX835P's? Use them instead of the 715's in larger venues. Since the 715's have 90 degree horns, they aren't good candidates for doubling up. Going with a single 3-way cab per side could be the best approach.

Why is it even a concern with "the tops not keeping up with the subs"?

Personally I see it as the other way around-but that is not the topic.

The ONLY question is "Is there enough top and sub to do the job"?

Are you going to but all the cabinets full out all the time?

NO- you are going to run them as loud as they need to be to do the job.

Let's say for instance that the tops can't keep up with the sub.

But lets also assume that the tops are loud enough for the job.

So what?-if the subs aren't being pushed to their maximum?

That just means that they will be cleaner.

Now if the tops aren't up to the task-then the question SHOULD be-my tops are not loud enough-NOT that they can't keep up with the subs.

When talking about subs or tops-the only thing you should be concerned with is "Will my weakest link be up to the task?" If it is, then who cares if the "other part" is just loafing along.

How are you determining that tops aren't keeping up with the subs? On paper, the 728 outruns the 715 by about 5dB, which is less than the size of the sub "haystack" that many people prefer.

My thoughts also. As a "general rule" the subs need to be capable of at least 10-15dB greater output than the tops. 20-25dB is not all that out of line. Depending on musical styles of course.

Thanks for the input all. I think they are looking for more top box content but are happy with the low end. It looks like cabinet is 75° x 50° so would 2 a side splayed work?. I guess I have to do a little more research before running out and buying stuff.
I think I had a QSC PLX 3002 bridged mono into each speaker so around 2000w a side available.
I do believe part of it is the aesthetics of the setup as the one event I was at it seemed plenty loud to me. There was not much headroom though.

How loud are you running the top box now? Are you clipping the amp or running into limiting?

If not-just turn it up.

You said "not much headroom left". How did you determine that? Headroom where (what piece of gear)?

Coverage and output are very different things. If they are looking for wider coverage-then yes-2 boxes would help.

If they just want louder-and you are already clipping the amp (or running into limiting), then adding a 2nd speaker covering the same area will make it louder-HOWEVER it WILL NOT sound as good as a single speaker.

Without know what "limitations" you are running into, it is hard to offer suggestions.

Man, you guys are a little literal. The dude is simply thinking about upgrading his top cabs and looking for a bit of advice.
Ben , I think you should go with the 725's. They're a good match for your 728's and are a proven (and approved by most) combo.
There, that was easy.

We can only respond to what is written.

This is the answer I wanted to hear but there were some valid points in the other info. I will have to A/B the 2 models to see exactly what I would be gaining.
