Storing paint ?

Bear with me; this is audio related !

The company which manufactures the speakers I use also supply paint for touching up road wear & tear.

Unlike the high quality speakers, the paint tin appears to be of really low grade - specifically the lid. In all tins i've ever had for other purposes the lip is rigid enough to withstand the flathead screwdriver prying it open.

This tin however, instead of the lid prying off the lip bends up. So for the first few times I used the tin I got it off but it wasn't neat.

This past weekend on my 3rd touchup I had to use pliers to get the lid off - grab the lip and pull.

I'd like to move the paint to another container. I thought i'd ask for some advice. Can I use a washed out jar either plastic or glass ? I'm looking to store under a litre - so not much.

The paint is similar to rockhard and is water based.

Re: Storing paint ?

as long as its air tight it should be fine, also note you should be storing the paint in a fire rated Cabinet

Not all paints need to be treated as flammables (although many do). The MSDS will tell you if your particular paint is flammable, and the manufacturer is obligated to provide a copy of the MSDS upon request (if you're a business, OSHA typically requires you to have it on hand).

More important is that whatever container you put the paint in is appropriate for the contents and properly labeled as to its contents. Nothing like an unlabeled can in the cabinet...

Re: Storing paint ?

As long as it's not classified as flammable, you can usually buy containers at a hardware store that will suffice. A mason jar would probably work fine, too. Labeling is important, and you don't want to ever let the paint freeze (though that might not be an issue near you).

I can be lazy sometimes. Instead of making a mess pouring the contents into another container, marking the new container and keeping a copy of the flammability data....

I'd just stick the whole can in either a zip-lock bag or a big screw-top jar...

KISS :)

Re: Storing paint ?

I'm not sure of the flammable paint storage concerns. At Home Depot, the only part of the paint department with any special fire consideration is the spray paint, with some low-flying sprinklers directly mounted in the shelf.

I was just at an auto body paint supply store, the ENTIRE store is essentially flammable, and there is NO special consideration given to the paint at all. It's in the basement of a wood-framed building; it didn't even look like they had a fire alarm system. This is one of the largest auto body paint suppliers in CT that I know of.

My paint sits in the cans on the paint shelf, and my spray paint goes in a steel file cabinet. If I mix paint with solvent or water for spray guns, I store it in Home Depot provided paint mixing cans with lids.
