Helge,
You may find more interest about this item in a Home Recording forum.
BTW, the VTB-1 was designed to add "tube distortion" to a mic'd signal, so anything you're seeing is likely intended.
The Blend control allows you to vary the output mix between the IC preamp and the secondary tube stage.
The tube only had limited plate voltage (60V), so many would call this a "toob" preamp (starved-plate design).
