The city with big shoulders
Out to Vegas for slightly belated 26th anniversary weekend with my lovely wife. She was looking around the Vega intergooglewebs for a possible show. Tells me Santana is playing.

I go, "Oh, probably out back at the MGM arena where we saw The Police a few years ago?"
She goes, "No, it says they are at the HOB in Mandalay Bay."
Says me, "You're kidding."
Says she, "It says he's playing a 45th anniversary tour in rock at intimate club settings."

VIP table for two. Stoked would be an understatement. I don't even care if I happen to know anyone here working on the crews.
But if you are, and want to have a beer and say hi...it would just be icing on the cake.

It'll be a banner month too, as we just saw Dr. John and the Lower 911 at Space in Evanston, IL last week. Two sold out shows, the place is SRO at 250. Even standing in back you're only 25-30' away from the stage.

Best regards,

John

Re: This Saturday

John, nice score! Hope you didn't have to mortgage your house for it, but seeing a great act in a smaller place is always the best. I don't even want to see a show in a venue >2K cap, with the possible exception of aging arena rock.

Got them directly from the HOB via their website, no secondary resellers.

Heck, we even got Jimmy Buffett tickets for later this Summer online direct. First time in quite a few years we've not had a conflicting gig. The trials and tribulations of being a sound engineer married to a musician-you don't always get to go to other performer's gigs.

And I agree, anymore, catching an act like this in a smaller venue is a much more rewarding time, IMO. It would appear to me that there is more of this happening too.

Best regards,

John

Re: This Saturday

Great score.

I got to see Fleetwood Mac last week at one of the casinos in CT. Had seats 4 rows up behind monitor beach. Great view except for one helical that blocked Mic's head :-)
Also, were not deafened by the main hang.

I got to watch Fleetwood mac from directly above stage as a truss spot opp. Total surprise because I was a last min replacement for the other opp.

Thought about seeing them again, but the one and only time was that big tour about 36 years to the day. Boulder Stadium. One of those classic all day shows, with Bob Seeger on the Night Moves tour opening, Firefall on their big hit tour, along with Country Joe (of "and The Fish"), and John Sebastian.

Interestingly, in light of a sad event in Colorado history, I also saw Barry Fey on stage that day:

Barry Fey, famed concert promoter, takes readers through his 'Backstage Past' - Boulder Daily Camera

Here's the picture from the article. I'm the one about halfway up at 11:00 o'clock Barry's perspective. ;>)

Re: This Saturday

Same show, last Sat? If so, I saw you guys climb up.

Sorry, no. This was several years ago up in Green Bay WI. Truss spots are local crew and the guy I replaced had some sort of problem that prevented him from climbing. I live an hour away and not on show call, so I was just going to watch from the house lights position.

Re: This Saturday

I once got a last minute call to come mix monitors for the dance band at 'an awards dinner' that was part of some conference. Turned out the 'dance band' was Tito Puente. And one of the award winners was Carlos Santana. Who then sat in with Tito for a couple numbers. That was a very fun night.
