Cleaning out the storage locker I found the box that this was in.

I't's the cone from a McCauley 18 inch woofer removed and replaced from the keyboard monitor after a performance several years ago by the band Neurosis.

A pretty thorough job, I'd say.

Believe it or not-there are a number of people who think they can rewind just the voice coil-and say it will be as good as new. NOT!

Re: Throrougly Blown!

Seems like loud keyboards can really cook a coil, especially synths since they can produce very low crest factor signals (sine/square/sawtooth). I remember Yngwie Malmsteen's keyboard player setting a Rat fill on fire back in the 80s during a solo. He kept signaling Dave to turn up the monitor during the solo. Dave, never one to hold back, obliged until the smoke poured out and orange could be seen. I can't remember if it was the driver that fried or the crossover. Rat designed and built all their crossovers back then and used heavy gauge chokes. Sometimes they weren't heavy enough and they would burn.

The "right" singer could set a monitor on fire too.

One club gig David Yow of the Jesus Lizard wound up on his back with his head between two Harbinger 524 passive wedges, screaming in harmony with the feedback he could cause being that close to the speakers.

When the choke coils had enough their insulation burned off and the resulting smoke signaled the end of THAT part of the set.

He volunteered immediately after the set to pay for the damages as long as he could have the charred remains of the crossover parts. He had a small collection of microphones and sound odds and ends that he'd "collected" in that way.
