UK Tour - Cell Phone

I have travelled overseas a good amount, but this is my first time being in the UK for a month. I have AT&T and and iPhone 5s and I would like to have data/text/minutes while I am there but ATT charges a ridiculous amount. What are my best options?

ATT data package
Getting a UK sim card
Getting a UK phone

Thoughts?

The newer ATT data plan isn't terrible and overages are rather cheap compared to what it used to be. I find that I never go over the max plan and I use my phone ALOT overseas. Minutes wise the only way to get around things for cheap is unlocking the phone and getting a SIM card when you arrive over there.

Evan and I shared a TEP device once while touring over there. It was a mini WIFI hotspot that gave us a decent amount of data for fairly cheap.

Tom, do you make a lot of actual phone calls? I don't, so I usually just add the AT&T package that lets me make calls in foreign countries and pay per minute. Then I add a data plan. A little more pricey, but way less of a hassle than dropping off the grid for a month, explaining your alternate number to people, carrying two phones, etc. I find if I am careful I can get by on about 120MB a week.

The main thing I need is data. I have grown accustomed to touring with unlimited LTE in the states. I hardly use minutes while touring. Only the occasional call to the hotel to make sure rooms are ready, and if I can't track down the promotor in the venue.

I was just in the uk and Europe on a festival tour run over the summer and one of the guys in the other band had a tmobile phone plan from the states that actually worked everywhere in Europe. It was really cool, he was able to setup a hotspot for wifi to. Really came in handy and he said it was included with his service ....

I'm sure that anyone who had ATT/Verizon would probably stop believing that it was included in their plans as soon as the bill came.

Both ATT and Verizon have European-roaming plans. They aren't cheap enough for my boss so when he travels to Europe our email inboxes fills up.
