Very cool from TC Electronic

I went to a TC Electronic guitar stomp effects pedal demo tonight.

Not a lot was super-relevant for us soundies, but it was interesting nontheless.

Anyway, a lot of their new pedals are DSP based and it is possible to download custom presets or presets from other people including famous guitarists. This can be done either via USB cable, or, here's the cool part: You can get your smart phone and a special app to transmit the preset via it's antenna and if you hold the phone close to the guitar pickups, these signals are picked up (sounds like a fax machine) and the pedal regognizes the preset codes, automatically sets the pedal in "program mode" downloads the program from the phone and stores it in the DSP of the pedal. It all takes just a few seconds, could easily be done between songs!

It's actually the speaker of your phone that generates the tone, sounds like an old dial-up modem. The sound is picked up be being in range of the guitar pickups, which is how the pedal "hears" the signal.

Cool stuff, but old news unfortunately...

Actually, it seemed like the phone was quiet and the sound was coming from the guitar amp. It wasn't just like a fax. More like Scrillex .

Re: Very cool from TC Electronic

I learned pretty quick to turn the amp down when demo'ing that feature for customers.

These guys turned down, but not off, for attendees to be able to hear that there was data traffic going on. They were presenting it as just what it is rather than silent magic.

As a potentiol customer I like that better, anyway.
