What are the boxes

That provide 1/8" x XLR line level output? Not a DI outputting Mic level. Whirlwind or Radial? Looking for a simple solution to connect XLR to powered speakers without changing the input to Mic level.

If all your are looking to do is sum to mono, you just need some resistors. In order for something with a transformer to work correctly it needs to drop to mic level.

I am not looking to sum to mono. I think one of the manufacturers makes a box 1/8" in dual xlr out L/R. Technically it could be done with a cable adapter but I want a box. The converters to mic level signal are easy to find and I have plenty.

So you want to add additional bulk by building a simple cable adapter into a box, along with the additional cost of the box and potentially the additional point of failure of an additional connector, instead of using something like http://whirlwindusa.com/catalog/pre-wired-cables/adapter/mst2xm06us ?

Thanks Brian that is what I was looking for. I foolishly didn't realize they would require a power source. I could have sworn there was a passive solution but likely I am remembering incorrectly. The RANE balance buddy is the closest I have found but was really hoping for a whirlwind or radial product as they have been rock solid in all my other adapters.
Rob you are correct I am looking for a box solution to add bulk. Think Iphone/laptop on a table with a couple 50' xlrs attached. It wouldnt take much for that 1/8" to pop out or drag a phone off the table.
I guess Rolls has one as well.

You may be over thinking this. An iPod generally delivers a -10 signal, more than adequate to get a fair amount of level from a +4 input. I suspect buying a mini to two RCA plug cable and replacing the RCAs with XLRs will get you background music at a wedding level performance out of your powered speakers.

The extra bulk and weight of a box, even one of the larger Radial boxes, is going to provide very little protection to the 1/8" connection if someone trips over the XLR connected to it, and if that's your concern, I'll argue that it's a problem best solved with appropriate cable dress and a 6" strip of gaff on the 1/8" cable.

But if you're dead set on having a box with line-level output, instead of the simpler laptop DIs (mic-level output; the Rolls box you linked to appears to be one of these) or adapter cables (not a box, unbalanced output), and can tolerate the need for external power (to power the internal line drivers), I'd look at something like the Radial Presenter

Won't the Whirlwind Isopod2 or PCDi do what you want? Their output is -10bB vs +4dB but, that should still be enough to drive your line level input.

Is this for a system that you will be running or for a dry rental type music play back system?

If it's a dry rental system where someone take's it to use for music playback from a computer, phone, iPad, type device
I"m thinking I would want to keep the interface to the speaker at mic level, that way if some one starts messing with the
speaker and ends up with it line level mode all they did was turn the volume down.
