What should I get ??? (speaker suggestions)

Looking for some options on some high packs to go with my Yorkville TX9s subs...

I currently have a pair of Peavey QW3f cabinets that I use with these subs and they work fantastic...no issues with how they sound or there output..
My only issue...if you want to call it that...is that they are physically to big for some of the venues I work in.

I am looking for something with a maximum height of 30"..
Can be a 12" or 15" with a horn but must be able to be run full range (not biamped).
Power is not an issue (IT8k).

I have been looking at the soon to be released JBL STX815 and the EV QRX115, they seem to fit the bill and can also be used as monitors when I run the QW3.
Also considering the Yorkville E152B...
(trying to stay around $1k per box if possible)

For my smaller rooms I am currently running a Yorkville LS800P/EF500P rig and it does the job well...I just really want to use my TX9 subs more...because I like them...alot....

Can be new or used (if anyone has something they are thinking of getting rid of..)

Sounds like you have lots of different speakers Vinny...

What do you use for monitors now? I'd be trying to streamline everything with an eye towards being able to scale up or use in a number of circumstances.

Why can't you just use the EF500p's?

I do have a few speakers currently!
I still have my RCF ART325i cabinets which actually would work for what I need.....I am still just exploring other options.

While the EF500p works great, and would also work well with the TX9s...I don't want to go with a split passive/active setup.
While the debate will always continue on what is easiest to use, I still prefer the ease of setup running my passive rig.
I know there are cable options to help the setup time using active speakers but I just prefer my passive setup using the Itech's.

I have Yamaha CM15V cabinets for monitors now, and they have done the job nicely for over 5-years now without missing a beat....but I wouldn't mind eventualy replacing them with a better quality cab, which is why I am looking at something along the lines of the STX815/QRX115..

If you would like to keep things in the "Yorkville family", why not try a pair of E152's? I used two or four (depending on application) over my pair of TX9's and ran the system first as a 2-way system and then started bi-amping the tops to make things 3-way. For full-range 800 watts @ 8ohms per cab makes them very happy. They can also be used as monitors.....so they are versatile. I know that ATR Treehouse in Providence has been selling a few e152's as used rental stock over the past few months. Give them a call.
The e152's weigh approximately 80 lbs. and I can move them myself.
Maybe I can bring a pair by for you to demo in your basement.

Are the E152's louder than the Yorkville U15? I like that they are an 8ohm box versus the U15 or the E1152, but I never thought the U15 was a great "in your face" loud rock box when I owned a bunch last year- although they did sound very good. Haven't heard the E152 myself.

I have never done a side by side with the u15's thus I cannot comment on their comparison. My only practical experience is with the e152B's that I own. Being an 8ohm box, I have driven (full range) all four of my e152's using one Itech 6000 power amp (2 cabs per channel) and they worked well.
Call Yorkville in Niagra Falls and have them connect you to the plant in Toronto (on their dime) and talk to Guy. He seems to be the one with the most knowledge regarding the cabs that Yorkville makes.

At this time they do not. I have seen no ill effect as of this writing. I'll contact Yorkville via email and have them send me the parts.....'just spaced it out. If I remember correctly, when the notice came out several years ago I contacted my local dealer and was told that the upgrade was needed if I planned on flying my cabs..
I might as well get it done while things are still under warranty.

Hey Vinny,
Someone on Prosoundweb is selling a pair of used Yorkville TX4's that looks like they may go cheap.
FS: Pro touring speakers

If you are looking for mid/high cabs for your TX9's....these are great boxes that Yorkville recommends to use with those particular subs.

The only caveat is that the TX4's are bi-amp only boxes (you "must" have a small amp lying around for the horns..).
These cabs weigh 80lbs. each, have excellent specs: Sensitivity (dB @1Watt/1m) HF:110, LF:99

The rig I normally take with me for club work is a pair of TX4's with one TX9s sub.

I am scheduled to provide a rig for a mid-week kid rock band gig at the Venus DeMilo in a couple of weeks. I plan on using one TX4 over one TX9s per side (I may use two TX4's per side if the audience exceeds 400 people). You are welcomed to come by and check out the rig. Send me a PM

It's very tempting....
I would have to do some re-wiring in order to run Biamp tops (which I was trying to avoid)
The other thing is all I have for an amp is a IT8k, which will work with the 15's on one channel and the horns on the second....will have to be limited down to just about nothing to keep them safe..

Very tempted....

You'd actually be surprised how much voltage a compression driver can take, especially since they are usually 16 ohms nominal.

I bet you'd have that IT8000 well within 10dB of clip before the limiters kicked in.

Having that much voltage available will certainly squeeze the most performance out of the compression drivers, that's for sure!

I have this exact rig (4xtx4, 4 x tx9s) in a live band / dj room - about 500 person cap... I think it's been installed 8 + years using a tx-4p, first w crest CA power (CA6, CA18,CA18), now switched to QSC pl.60II on (mids + subs)... only lost 1 - 15" in that whole time.
They have everything from national acts to bar bands... it was all good, and it's still truckin.

No, you won't have to "limit down to just about nothing." Are you planning to run your HF "balls to the walls" all the time?

Load a bi-amp preset into your 8000, it can be for almost any JBL model, like a SRX512. Patch a signal source but don't bother hooking up speakers. Hook up System Architect to the amp so you can monitor the input level and compare it to the OUTPUT level. Hit 'play' on your TunePlayer. You'll see that the combination of pass-band gain (typically a negative figure for HF) and the crossover's HPF on the highs significantly lower the amount of energy being delivered to the HF driver.

Do you need a peak voltage limiter? Eh, maybe... if you routinely operate the HF device near the end of it's life, a really, really fast peak voltage limiter *might* save your HF if Clueless Singer sticks her mic in the wedge or your patch boy unplugs a phantom-powered mic or DI before the console input is muted.

In typical live music reinforcement at the bar/club level you will get more long term protection of your speakers with proper RMS power limiting. The goal of RMS power limiting is to get the maximum acoustic output over the duration of the performance. To find this majik number you need to know the point at which you transducers go into power compression. The values you come up with are targets; the actual settings values will be determined by your ear and what System Architect tells you about what is happening: the amount of limiting taking place, the thermal headroom of the I-Tech, the behavior of the load attached. And use your ears... oh, I already said that.

Bennett and Ivan and I have said many times that limiting for system protection is a crap shoot. It's there to keep the moderately stupid or easily discouraged from inflicting damage. Any operator who is intent on getting more out of a speaker than it an give will eventually kill that speaker.

Bennett actually set my rig up with the Itechs, I have no complaints, He seems to have made it pretty idiot proof for me!
I just really need to decide if it's worth the money for the change, I have to say the QW3 cabs I have now sound fantastic and my only issue with them is how tall the cabinet is.
The physical weight is not an issue, it's just the overall height of the PA stack (TX9/QW3).
In some of my smaller rooms I would be hitting the ceiling with the stack!
