Whats the point of send/receive channel inserts versus TRS?

Since I had both desks and didn't want to have to wire up two different types of insert snakes for the same rack, I used the single point insert snakes and then used Whirlwind TRS female locking connector (Neutrik) to dual TS 1/4" jacks adapters when I'd use the GL4000.
