One of the vocal mic performers I have had the pleasure of working with was Sam Moore-from Sam and Dave fame.
With his band-there was no mixing involved. Just turn it up-and let them do their thing!
When he wanted to scream he would plant the mic stand and walk back and "let go". When he was singing quite-he was eating the mic. Never had to touch the levels. When he was holding the mic and got loud-he simply pulled the mic away-so the level was correct.
Same thing with the band-the horn section would stand back from their mics while "in the groove" and then step up to tag a note-then stand back.
When it was time for the guitar solo-did we turn up the level of the guitar-NO-the rest of the band back their level DOWN (WOW WHAT A CONCEPT!) so the guitar could be heard.
Truly a great bunch of MUSICIANS!!!!!!!!! that were there to perform thier music
