Where can I get short mic stands?

Trying to find some mic stands that are shorter than 35". It seems like the only come in two sizes, 35"-66" or less than 18". Can't seem to find anything in-between. Looking for something with a round bottom too, as opposed to the tri-pod kind, they take up less space.

Reason I'm asking is I want a little more "freedom" when miking drums. The stands I've got now are all way too tall (or kick drum/guitar amp size) except for the overheads, which are fine.

Any ideas?

hmm, that looks interesting. We have something similar but it puts the mic too close to the drum, where about half the mic is floating over the top of the drum. The drummer hates it. That LP claw however looks like it might be able to get the mic far enough away to be out of the way yet still close enough to pick up the drum. Thanks for the tip!

K&M 259 series is what we use for small stands, also with SHORT legs. For smaller/harder to put a stand in stuff (say bottom snare) where the mic weight isn't an issue (I wouldn't recommend a RE20 or beta 52), we use a small (apex/atlas?) V stand.

Otherwise I think we've cut down ms10 and ms6 straight stands and rethreaded them into short round base stands and added a boom.

Vertical use of a boom arm doesn't get you what you want?

I've had good luck with these: MICROPHONE STAND-25900-300-55

Not really.

Here's what it looks like (please forgive the crude drawing):

That's with the mic stand as low as it can go.

Tripod stands?

Take a taller one, introduce it to Mr. Pipe Cutter. Fold up the legs, run them up towards the clutch, and cut off the bottom. Re-flare the bottom so the leg assembly won't accidentally fall off.

If in a cast iron base, cut off the threaded end, and then re-thread the tube to the base. This requires getting a die - somewhere in these forums I saw what size you'd need.

Re: Where can I get short mic stands?

On drum kits I have been a fan of taking a "tall" boom arm and putting it on a "short" mic stand to get me where I need to go rather than dropping down off a tall boom stand.

exactly what I was looking for!

These are also worth a look. They can be used at standard height or mid height for drums.

Atlas Sound - MS43E

You can usually buy just the poles from an atlas dealer if you already have bases. Just keep in mind that the MS43 takes a larger diameter hole in the base. It actually will work in an MS20/25 base. The DMS poles work in MS10/12 bases.

there are cheaper alternatives, but Atlas are a standard for a reason.
