Which Heil Mic to use?

I am working with a very quiet male singer in a 6-pc band this weekend, and his voice/style is like country singers Bryan White and Vince Gill. Would the PR22 or PR35 be better for him, capturing his voice well, but rejecting cymbals and FOH sound (all on IEMs luckily)? I've tried OM7 and ND967 on him, but I have to crank the gain so hot and then I get the sizzle of the cymbals/high hat too much.

Other mics I have to try are OM6, PL80a, ND767, but I think the Heil's might have better rejection.

Thanks.

Well, of the two, I would go with the PR35.

The gain doesn't affect what the mic picks up, just how much that signal gets amplified. Can you lower the stand a bit and point the mic up at him rather than coming in horizontally? That should get less of the kit, and IEM's mean you won't have any issues with wedge placement.

The PR-35 has much better side and rear rejection than the PR-22. My choice would be the 35, and if TJ has one to loan that's a plus.

I have had the same issues when we were still using acoustic drums. A
Plexiglass drum shield does the trick very well

+1 and I agree with those saying the PR35 is the way to go. It's a great sounding mic with uncanny rejection from anywhere except right in front.

Re: Which Heil Mic to use?

Took the advice of using the PR35 and it worked extremely well. Thanks for your suggestions. Now, would love to find a PR35 wireless capsule at a reasonable price; will keep checking around.

Re: Which Heil Mic to use?

It's interesting that the charts on the Heil Sound website show much more mid band rejection at the rear with the PR22. But the PR35 has a little more rejection up around 10k (hence the recommendation for reducing cymbal bleed). Any comments from folks about the differences between these 2 as far as other kinds of on stage bleed? I'm a little concerned that the graphs only show 0 degree and 180 degree. There are a lot of degrees between those 2. And the cardioid looking graph doesn't have any indication of what frequency it represents. 1khz?

Has anyone compared the new vs old PR35?
Differences -? I know what the marketing says, but did the change alter anything which might be an unintended negative?

According to Neumann, the pattern of a mic changes when something (like a face) gets close to it. Some they tested became more sensitive in the back than in the front!

Re: Which Heil Mic to use?

In a direct A/B test the old and new PR-35 do sound different.... not bad just different. How much is due to design/build or just the characteristics of samples I had I simply cannot say.
