Who needs a design engineer?

Re: Who needs a design engineer?

The word "resourceful" doesn't begin to describe a kid who can do what he's doing *where* he's doing it.

We need more kids like Kelvin, everywhere. And more mentors... some of the comments are quite interesting.

Many people forget how "easy" we have it. Availability of parts and knowledge.

Having electricity is a major problem in many parts of Africa (and other places around the world). And we complain when it goes out for even a second or two-not a couple of weeks at a time-that would be unbearable to most of us.

I can kind of relate-as I was getting into electronics in the mountains of NC. Almost all of my parts came from old radios and TVs that I scavenged.

His situation is much worse. I am glad that MIT gave him a chance. It is going to take minds like his to come up with new solutions to problems in a different manner.

I remember trying to get together orders for a $5 minimum from places like Jameco.

The first speaker I built was from the coal dump mechanism of my train set. Not great by any means-but it did work :)

Funny how powersoft is basically using the same idea-some 40yrs later.

I wish him luck and hope he finds a good career and can help his family and community.
