Windows 7 SP1

With all the Apple hype lately, it made me think of how little hype other companies get, especially when they release genuinely useful products.

So Microsoft, so far, has been doing a great job with Windows 7, keeping it secure and working well. I think it's the first Microsoft operating system that I've installed once, when it came out, and haven't had to reinstall yet.

So I went to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 x64 on my machine the other day, and it turns out that because my system image was Ghosted over from another drive (it's currently running on a RAID volume), that it can't mount the system partition properly and therefore can't install the service pack.

Quite an odd error, that seems to only be able to be fixed by reinstalling Windows, so before I make the plunge, has anyone else installed it yet, and do they have any comments about it? Is it worth it?

Hey Silas:

I bought a new MacBook Pro 17" recently and decided to give Windows 7 (ultimate) a try in both 32 and 64 bit formats even though XP was working flawlessly for what I need Windows for: hosting my 32 bit measurement and recording software as well as their external USB and Firewire hardware devices.

I found (as expected) that the compatibility of the 32 bit OS was necessary and its increased speed was nice, though subtle. It was fun seeing all 8 gigs of RAM in use with the 64 bit OS, but that was its only advantage. In a few years things will catch up I'm sure.

I'm getting pretty fluent with Win 7 at this point and absolutely love it. The internals of the audio driver model are completely different and vastly superior to XP. I almost considered ditching OSX and living entirely in Windows. One of my children said he would be ashamed of me if I did that - but I almost did until I put about a week on it and remembered why I like OSX better for most of life. :)

To the point: SP1 hates anything non-standard with disk access. Your cloned drive might not be the issue - it might be the RAID array - or vice versa - or both. I had a similar problem a few days ago, but due to a low level utility that allows Win 7 to use the HFS+ formatting of my OSX partition natively.

I'm the OP on this: http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?p=1835695#post1835695

So... are you suggesting that we should be getting excited about the fact that it's the only OS they've released that you have not had to reinstall ... or that although it is "secure and working well" your only option to keep it doing so, may be to in-fact reinstall it?

Maybe the sarcasm just went over my head a bit?

I'm not a windows hater... I do use Apple computers, but I don't have any loyalty to them beyond their functionality for a given task... and the fact that I'm way to deep into Logic Pro now to attempt to buy back into the Neuendo lifestyle.

I will say that my current Macbook Pro (which I purchased used) came with a copy of Windows 7 installed under Parallels... I gave it a pretty good test spin for a week or so and did really enjoy... it did everything I needed to do and looked pretty good doing it. I then tried to update and found out that it was a non-legit copy and subsequently dumped it off the computer... but it did look pretty impressive from what I saw.

Running it on my desktop. 32 bit. Nothing major I've noticed. Still anoys the hell out of me that it won't see partitioned SD cards correctly. But thats what Ubuntu is for right?
