Wireless instrument mic for Didgerido

Hello,

I have a gig Saturday that is requesting that one of the musicians be able to play a didgerdoo out in the middle of the room instead of on stage. I have a wireless sennheiser e935 and one sennheiser ew112 lapel.

Should I just stick the lapel on it and call it a day or is there someway I could jury rig another "wired mic" to work with the transmitter?

Any suggestions? I've never worked with a didgeridoo before so perhaps does it even need a mic?

Thanks
Jared

Re: Wireless instrument mic for Didgerido

As a trained didg player myself, I would suggest you mic it just because the LF off a reasonably portable instrument will need a little help. There's not a ton of output to worry about, so a lav mic will be fine. You can even place it inside the tube, although it may get a little (ahem) wet. Since the sound of the didg is largely the resonances of the tube you may want to play a little with placement to avoid any nulls inside.

Thanks Bennett. Would a "zip tie" work to attach the mic to the end of it and not damage the instrument? I suppose that would affect the vibrations coming off. Would it work to "mount" the lapel on a small mic stand located at the mouth of the didg that way its not physically attached to the instrument?

Jared,

Really depends on the instrument. Best to ask the player, mine were always made out of PVC pipe.

Well yesterday was the event and I thought it turned out well. I used a Heil PR22ut with the Sennheiser EW112 battery pack. Stuck it on a shorty mix stand with the mic placed right in the center of the opening.

Thanks for the suggestions. The adaptor cable worked well.
