This is not an area I usually pass judgement on, but the digital rerelease of Gordon Lightfoot's Gords Gold 2 has to be the worst butchering I have ever heard.

Were you around for the early days of CD remasters? When they used safety copies of LP master tapes straight to digital with early A/Ds? Just thinking of that era makes me shudder.

Re: Worst mix/master ever

I was, but I was not an early adaptor of cd's. In those days I was part of the DC hardcore movement, and most of the stuff I had was passed by cassette tape. I also shared a house with a guy who was one of the traditional type audiophiles, who would buy an lp, record it to reel to reel for playback, and actually count each time the recording was played so he didn't go over some tally.

In the case of Gord's Gold, I was actually comparing the iTunes version to the cd I used to have. Whole verses are changed, new instruments added, different effects used. I don't know if they went back to studio tapes or actually rerecorded some parts, but the contrast to what I was used to is dramatic, to the point where I rarely listen to it, which is why it jumped out so much on a recent listening that I posted.

Perhaps the re-issue is done from out-takes or alternates that weren't released.....until now. I used to get CD's in Norway that were the original artists (Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, etc) but were much inferior to the ones which were released here.

The in-studio version of bootlegging?
