(Beyond keyboard + main stage, I am a bit new to using "midi"). Here is my wish list to accomplish. Is this possible...

Using...

X32 via 2 S16 Stage Boxes
Waves Multi Rack (FW + MacBook Pro)
Chauvet Obey 70 (This can be or upgraded/changed w/n a reasonable budget)

Like most bands, our show file / set list changes night to night and sometimes deviates from that.

Is it possible to use the scene change from the X32 to trigger via MIDI a scene change in Waves & Light Controller? (I don't think it is?)

Is it possible to use a MIDI controller, to punch in a scene/midi number, that triggers the desired scene change in all 3 (X32, Waves, Light Controller).

Or is there some better way of doing this? I'd really like it to be more tactile than computer based, I am guess software (but having trouble with finding it on Mac) makes it easy?

Yes, but I think there are still bugs in the implementation that prevents you from doing it reliably.

I would assume so, the midi that the X32 responds to is program change <scene number> on channel 1. If you can set the other two to respond to the same, or send multiple midis, then you are fine.
There are midi translator programs that can send multiple midis from receiving a single one, so there are always solutions.

It all depends on what you want to do/need to do. The trick is finding the method that fits best with your ideal workflow and trigger from something you are already doing in that workflow.
Is scrolling thru' the setlist and selecting a song part of your current routine? Then find a way to have that operation be the trigger for everything.
Some show control software makes this easy, you can trigger events, playback midi, sound and video, open documents (lyrics and sheet-music).

Thank you for the reply.

For my work flow... it would be ideal/great to key in a scene number on a key pad, hit enter and *something* translates that into X32 gets the right scene change code, Waves if necessary gets its code, lights get its?

Any software recommendations on a Mac?

Maybe a free-standing gizmo like this?
MIDI Patch Changer Keypad Controller Program Sender 5 Pin DIN and USB New | eBay
or this: http://www.midi-hardware.com/index.php?section=prod_info&product=PCkpad

Software? Don't really know of any that will do exactly that, but I'm sure a hunt on the net will come up with something.

Thanks, I will work from here.

Re: X32 + Waves + Light Controller + MIDI

The X32 will output a MIDI program change with scene changes. if the other two devices will recognize MIDI program change commands [and i strongly suspect they do] you should be able to do it all from there. it's just a matter of getting the MIDI into the computer and lighting console, which is pretty straightforward stuff.

MIDI program change is one of the most basic MIDI functions so there's no reason why this shouldn't work just fine so long as you don't mind making separate scenes for all your devices for each scene change.

Re: X32 + Waves + Light Controller + MIDI

I had a look at the midi in the scenes. It seems it is working correctly in the current firmware version, and that it will save and load the settings with the show files.

It still will not do it or indeed even display already programmed settings in the editor, the X32-Edit, which can be a real pita if you are trying to prepare a show.
X32-Edit will not corrupt programming that is already done it seems, but that also means hat you have to check the show on the console for any stray programming when editing a show using midi.

Re: X32 + Waves + Light Controller + MIDI

I've been trying lightjams recently, the latest ver has osc, midi, artnet, sacn input and output, with the ability to program the software to accept input from those and output a different command, like a smart macro or something. Haven't figured it all out yet though... It may be something to look at though.

Re: X32 + Waves + Light Controller + MIDI

Update... here is where I ended up (for now) on this.

Using Set List Maker, I can load in all of our songs and then set lists for shows. Created MIDI Presets for all my lighting queues and presets for X32 queues.

For now using the iRig iOS MIDI, Amazon.com: IK Multimedia iRig Midi for iPhone/iPod touch/iPad: Musical Instruments (cheapest I could find?)

Set List Maker sends the scene change to X32 on Channel 1 and Lighting Controller on Channel 2. I can stack up as many queues as necessary.

To trigger the change, just tap on the little MIDI icon next to the song -> https://www.dropbox.com/s/z6qel6lgkawh8tu/photo.PNG

So far seems to work well, all in under $100. Waiting for X32 V2 to not be beta, before trying to initiate the changes from the console. Current setup leaves me tethered.
