Yamaha DSR versus DXR

Hi, all,

I'm getting some conflicting information regarding these two series. I have heard the DXR112, and liked it. I don't really have need for all the on board mixing and such, although it is nice. Instead, I'm really interested in performance. I would like to be able to use a pair of speakers with subs to cover blues/rock gigs outdoors.

I know the DSRs have 2" horn, compared to a 1" in the X. I'm used to larger horns doing better in that kind of environment. But I don't know really how the two series compare in the 12" versions, and I can't find a DSR to audition here.

A friend of mine who knows a Yamaha rep says the rep tells him I would probably not be able to tell the difference between the two speakers, and that I should save my money. But I read other things online.

Some of the things that I'm hearing online:

  • "My listening and not mixing impressions...although I did have board access a few times. The DSR seems to get pretty loud without changing tone too much. Able to get vocals present well. The DXR sounds a bit like a Yami version of a K12. Pretty Hifi on playback music, pleasant sounding within their dynamic range. Seem to have the 'fall back' upper mids like a K12 seems to exhibit with a live band."
  • "To my ears, you have hit the nail on the head. The DSR's (which I own) do better for live sound as they have better vocal clarity, and quite a bit more output (despite what the specs might say) than the DXR's or the K12's. The K12's get harsh when you push them too much."
  • "First, the DSR112 is in a completely different league than the DXR12. In fact, the DSR112 is better to my ears than any speaker in its price class, and quite a few that are much more expensive. This speaker gets loud, and stays sounding great clear into solid limit ..... which is louder than most people are going to push it. This speaker really puts out the sound."

Anybody here who has compared the two directly and can comment? Thank you!

This has been discussed. Read more.

I did read, hence my quotes...some of which come from this forum. I'm hoping for some new/updated/more specific info. The threads that tend to talk about the DSR tend to NOT have people who have directly compared the two series. If there isn't any more information than what I can get by search in old posts, so be it.

Re: Yamaha DSR versus DXR

I have both. The DSR's get noticebly louder and sound better doing it. I generally need far fewer cuts of the EQ when using DSR's as wedges.
Here's a real life example: recently did sound for a top 40 band doing a corporate Xmas party. 400 people in a room about 250' wide by about 75' deep. Stage was on the wide wall. As it got later and more drunkier (not me, the crowd) we started to turn up more and more . I only brought in a pair of QSC HPR18 for subs, and the DSR's had no problem keeping up. For the encore I actually popped the breakers on the subs, but the DSR's still kept up to this point. I presume we still had a bit of room left, as I saw no limit lights. Coverage for the dancefloor was good, not so much to the far sides obviously. It wasn't crucial to have the coverage in this case. I may have SMAART traces for both boxes, but they would have been taken in different rooms....maybe not so relevant for comparison.

Re: Yamaha DSR versus DXR

I would add that you see a lot of DXR's for sale, ebay, Craigslist, etc. Very rare to find used DSR's for sale.

I have a pair of DSR 12's for floor monitors, they rock for that application. I plan on adding 2 more.
For FOH I still prefer my JBL PRX615's. Warmer, natural sounding loudspeakers.

True, but I would guess there have been more DXR units sold overall, since they were more targeted to the MI crowd. I don't remember ever seeing DSRs at Guitar Center, but they stocked the DXRs as soon as they came out. If they sold 5x as many DXRs, I'd expect that many more used units being sold.

I thought the same about the DXR115 compared to the DXR112, but if I am honest I think the critical parts of the midrange were more honest and projected better through the 12. Whenever I hear a term like "warmer," I tend to think 'good for an acoustic duo, bad for a blues band in a nightclub or outdoors.' ;-)

I'd welcome some elaboration on what you mean by that: to me, the Yamaha DXRs are voiced brighter than JBLs I have heard, but to me they sound like they are actually just not getting scooped in that range, where others are.
