My listening and not mixing impressions...although I did have board access a few times.
The DSR seems to get pretty loud without changing tone too much. Able to get vocals present well.
The DXR sounds a bit like a Yami version of a K12. Pretty Hifi on playback music, pleasant sounding within their dynamic range. Seem to have the 'fall back' upper mids like a K12 seems to exhibit with a live band.

Hi John,

To my ears, you have hit the nail on the head. The DSR's (which I own) do better for live sound as they have better vocal clarity, and quite a bit more output (despite what the specs might say) than the DXR's or the K12's. The K12's get harsh when you push them too much.

As for heat, the DSR's stay much cooler than my PRX618S-XLF's even when pushed to clip limit. If they aren't pushed too hard, they get to a temperature I would call "warm to the touch". Not hot. When pushed really hard, they get just hot enough that if you press your hand solidly against them, it will get uncomfortable in a few seconds.

I use mine as mains over subs and love them. The mid lows in particular are quite nice for the punch in the bass and toms. The XLF cross-over is at 90Hz which works quite well with these speakers IMHO.

How are the DSR subs?
Not in the same league as the JBL PRX618/718XLF.

I thought they sounded fine (not as good as the XLF's, but still pretty good), but the volume output isn't really close to an XLF.

A single DSR112 is nearly capable of handling 2 XLF's IME. I don't see how Yamaha put out such an unbalanced top over sub set of speakers. They sound good together, but there is such an output difference.

I run my DSR's gain at around 10:00 and run my XLF's at around 2:00 (one top over one sub).

I suppose this is to be expected. The price of a 12" DSR is about the same as an 18" sub.

Re: Yamaha DSR vs DXR

DSR112 is our new utility speaker. Great monitor, great small FOH with subs, delays, fills. Nice price, wish they were lighter.
Also wish the sub performed as well. I've used them, but don't/won't own any.

Re: Yamaha DSR vs DXR

We just set up our new DSR112's over 1x DSR118W. Of course 2 tops over 1 sub is unbalanced to begin with, but the '118W reached its limits well before the tops did. Still, I'm pleased with the sound of the DSR112s.

Re: Yamaha DSR vs DXR

Love my DSR's, which I use for monitors! I've read lot's of reviews and most say the DXR is several steps below the DSR. I like the price on the DXR and it looks to share the same metal grill as the DSR, but I decided against them due to the reviews. You'll note that there are a ton of DXR's selling on eBay, but few or none of the DSR's.

Peter,

I would think that a single DSR112 over 2 DSR118W's would be about right.

At any rate, I think that others here have had the same experience with the DSR vs DXR opinions. I can't see how anyone that heard both wouldn't. It isn't that the DXR's are bad, it is just that the DSR's are really quite good (best in this price category IMHO).

I would say that I like the Meyer UPA's better, but sadly Mrs. Santa has put her foot down on that idea ;) Something about kids and college ;)
