Greetings;

I have been called to mix a 2 day show this summer. The sound company is bringing in a yamaha im8-32 desk.

IM8 | Mixers | Products | Yamaha

Looks to be ok for the bands I know are coming in. It will have 2 quad gates and 2 effects processors with it.
(All bands have 5 to 6 piece kits so 8 channels of gates will be enough. )
My question is about the single compressor knob available per channel.
Is it useable for basic compression or is it better to bring in some toys of my own?
Again for the local bands coming in and for the most part the headliners are not too big of a demand as far as requirements. I'm mixing them all and was just wondering about the compressor.

Anyone have some "Hands on" with the board? I'm not going for a replacement desk or bringing in my own. This is just a walk in and mix type show so I will get by with whatever I find.

Thanks;

We've had one for about 3 years now. For its price range, its a good sounding board. The compressors work fine for snare or vocals (actually its great on a snare if you crank it down to about 2:00). Its ratio is somewhere between 2-3:1. If you need alot of GR, I'd recomend using outboard, as it isn't the best sounding comp with large gr. I wouldn't consider it money chanel material, but it is fine for a little compression on vocals. You have to be careful with it during a show as it adds makeup gain as lower the threshold/change the ratio. Also the compressor is fixed pre aux and pre eq.

Thanks for the reply Chris.

The show will have a monitor desk and split so I'll have time to get a feel for the compressors without effecting the monitors. I don't plan using them much but it won't hurt to have them there just in case.
Funny but a little on vocals and the snare was what I had in mind for the channel compressor.

Thanks again;
