Yamaha Stage Mix 2.0 News

The basic deal is that they are adding head amp control and scene memory. I would have preferred access to some of the other features other than scene memory, but it looks like this app for the iPad is going in the right direction for more control over time.

To be released sometime at the end of this month...

Cool thanks for the heads up

Re: Yamaha Stage Mix 2.0 News

I'm glad they added this feature, but hopefully sometime soon, they'll think to add the user button group... that would add a bunch of custom control ( delay tap), mps playback, stop, etc... that's what I found most lacking in the initial release... what do you need access to to mix from this ipad. Rev time, delay tap, head amp, AND maybe a reflection of a custom layer would be sweet...

Re: Yamaha Stage Mix 2.0 News

What I would like to see is an Android OS release of Stagemix (because the entire known world does not cater to Apple products believe it or not). With the addition of gains I am actually happy with it now as far as functionality. If more in depth function is truly needed, then perhaps a touch screen tablet computer (NOT a pad device, but full on tablet PC) running studio manager is the best solution for those needing full on remote console control.

IPad has much more marketshare than Andriod tablets, and a much larger install base. That may change, but at the moment, if you want to hit the most users with the least development, IOS is your platform.

Run VNC (on whatever pad OS you choose) controlling a computer running Stage Manager and wired directly to the console. There's no deeper control than that.

You lose the advantage of Stage Mix's utilization of multitouch, but you get back everything else.

This I know, unfortunately. Certainly not going to buy an iPad strictly for mixing when I already have my eyes on the Samsung Galaxy tab(used an overclocked rooted GalaxyTab the other day and was very very highly impressed) to go with my Captivate. For now, VNC is going to have to do the trick until a native Android OS app hits the street for tablets.

When running monitors with the IPad, headamp control is the thing I found myself going back to the board to change most often
This is good news indeed!

Re: Yamaha Stage Mix 2.0 News

You can name channels in Studio Manger...
Heh - yeah, I can see my post does look somewhat self-contradictory. :)What I mean is I hope they don't include lots feature that will clutter the interface and increase sync time. Channel naming should be straight forward - just make the labels clickable. The information contained in them is already synced as it is (and it needs to be, obviously). It's the addition of scene memory functions I'm not thrilled about. In my view that's not what StageMix is about, but maybe that's just me.

I agree... scenes should be picked prior to grabbing your iPad and roaming the venue. Now if its just a "save scene" button, then it won't be so bad. But if its the entire Scene library, that pointless.

Of course, you guys are all coming at this from the concert engineer viewpoint. Now, if you mixed sound for stage plays as well like I do, you would say that scene memory access ability would be invaluable. I build scenes for my shows just the same as a LD would. There might be a half dozen or more scenes for any given song if the play's a musical. On the LS9 itself, I have a custom button mapped as a "Go" button of sorts that simply does a scene increment up by one. However, when I mix concert sound I typically select the scene for the upcoming song, and seldom change it until the next song. Sometimes I might have a couple scenes saved for a particular song, but more aften than not it’s just one. With some of my bands, the scene is selected for me via MIDI when the band loads the song on stage. Bottom line though is, for a theater FOH engineer, scene access ability is a must.

Really? Are you thinking of running your scenes on a system that has variable execution latency based on wireless network conditions at that moment, as well as a control platform that has hit or miss response time when you hit a button?

StageMix is a great app for adjusting certain parameters as you walk around the stage (StageMix, get it?) or venue while setting up. It is not reliable enough at this point to run a show on as far as I am concerned. Particularly one with tight cueing.

+1. For some reason, I have better luck with the iPad VNCed into the MacBook running Studio Manager when I have to actually sit out front with an iPad to mix. I don't like it...at all...., but now our corporate clients know I can do it. Especially our local symphony orchestra, who conspired with my Boss against me for a hoity toity tux & tails fundraiser/dinner event where the need for a mix position came into question (Seriously?? No shit??). Boss brought up the fact that I've been doing simple small shows and some corporate stuff on the iPad. I was dragged kicking and screaming into the idea with this event, only because there was a dress rehearsal the night before the event. Okay, I thought, Stagemix isn't as dense as SM on the iPad, so I'll try it. but between only 8 channels on the screen and no way to have more windows open, plus and surprisingly enough, it was slower. Went back to Studio Manager, came up with a way to have the necessary windows open with a little of the window showing so I could grab it (HAVE to use a scribe pen, impossible without it), plus a lot of dragging, pinching, and zooming. Took about 4 tunes, but it came together. It....works...and they are happy. It's just not a satisfying experience for me as a mixer, which is one reason we do this right? But...(looonng sigh), it's become a selling point in some situations.

Oh, to mention this (edit), I use the Netgear WNDR (?) 3700 router, which has offered the most consistent and dependable wifi operation for me so far. Looking at the new WNDR 4500, might get it. Would really like to get something on the enterprise level. Open to suggestions...

The biggest problem, no kidding, is the people walking up and expressing the WOW factor of so-called "wireless mixing" while I'm trying to work. During the recent Governor's inauguration, I was bombarded with this most of the evening (of course, the Boss has to show this off to his buds) and about the time my patience's limit was tapped, I was smart enough to look back at the person looking over my shoulder...just in time to recognize our new governor checking out the screen. That sigh of relief at my restraint didn't come soon enough..:o))

The orchestra event was last October of 2011 and I don't think I've used Stage Mix since.

To swerve off-topic for a bit, I've been using the Presonus Studio Live 24 this week (not ours, another company's desk that offered its use). So far, I'd rather use the iPad app for it than mix on the thing if I have to use it. But maybe that will change with a little more use.

Re: Yamaha Stage Mix 2.0 News

With version 3 due out in a few weeks it's nice to say that for free application they are making great leaps each release. The next version will add panning, channel naming and even a tap tempo button for your delay. All of this technology is so new that the apps are wanting to move faster than the other parts of the system- i.e. routers. It will just take time to really get it all worked out.

I currently use my LS9 for a duo show that has been dialed in for 18 months so i don't need to access much more than basic eq and fader control. This show plays relatively small venues and me cutting seats is always an option, but an expensive one to the promoter. They never see the value of me having all the tools I need to do my job... until after the show.

Would I want to mix the entire band on it? No- but I could if I had to do so. And with side of stage mixing common for wedding reception and cocktail parties it's a great way to deliver good mixes. Even when i have a proper FOH placement I still use the iPad for adjusting EQ's. It's so much faster than scrolling through the racks and it's the touch screen I've always wanted on the LS9

No kidding.
The i-nuts have been driving me crazy.
Person in audience taps me and says: "Is that an Ipad?! oh-wow-isn't that cool!! OMG"
30 seconds later, someone else taps: "Is that an Ipad?! oh-wow-isn't that cool!! OMG"
and on and on and on

I brought out my old used Motion Labs PC tablet at a gig and when someone said "is that an Ipad", I said "no, it's a PC tablet" and watched the excitement drain from their eyes. They stopped asking questions and walked away disappointed.

I'm going to mix w/Studio Manager on the PC tablet a LOT more just so they'll leave me alone.
(Well that and because it actually does everything I need)

I use a Motion Labs tablet with my LS9 but I use Air Fader and it really works so much better than SM for me.
The new Beta is even better now that I can get at phantom and channel trim too.
I still get the WOW and have not had the "oh, not an iPad" moment.
