Plymouth, NH – December 2012… Part of The Common Man family of restaurants, The Flying Monkey Movie House and Performance Center attracts audiences from all around New England and beyond for shows featuring some of the best contemporary musical and comedy acts. Booking both regional and national artists, The Flying Monkey’s upcoming schedule includes violinist / fiddler Natalie MacMaster, singer / songwriter Judy Collins, guitarist Johnny Winter, and Blue Oyster Cult, among others. Providing sound reinforcement for artists of this stature is nothing to be taken lightly. That’s why a new sound system using components from Valencia, Spain-based D.A.S. Audio was selected.
Manchester, NH-based K Production Services, a full service production, design / build firm specializing in professional audio presentation services was contracted to design and oversee installation of the newly renovated theater’s sound system. Ultimately, a selection of D.A.S. Audio Aero 12A powered, 2-way, mid-high line array modules and LX-215A powered, band-pass subwoofer systems were deployed. Gary Agresti, the firm’s President, discussed the nature of the project.
“The Flying Monkey is an old converted movie house,” Agresti explained. “It is very oddly shaped and presented many sound-related challenges for live audio performance. The venue envisioned offering shows from a variety of genres—from soft acoustic acts all the way through loud rock concerts—and, thus, we needed to find a sound reinforcement solution that would provide maximum dispersion and clarity at all sound pressure levels.”
The Flying Monkey’s main loudspeaker system consists of fourteen D.A.S. Audio Aero 12A line array elements—flown six modules per side (stage left/right). Low frequency support for these two loudspeaker clusters is provided by two D.A.S. LX-215A sub bass enclosures—one per side, vertically aligned with the overhead Aero 12A hangs. Additionally, there are two Aero 12A’s mounted from the theater’s ceiling toward the rear of the space. These are used as an upper balcony delay system. A D.A.S. Audio DSP-4080 stereo / mono processor handles loudspeaker management tasks while an Avid Venue SC48 digital console resides at Front of House.
“With their self-powered design,” Agresti says, “the D.A.S. Aero Series 2 loudspeaker systems were the ideal match for this project. In addition to the streamlined cabling and ease of installation the powered systems afford, the D.A.S. equipment provides consistent coverage throughout the space, as well as excellent speech intelligibility and music reproduction characteristics. The vocals just pop while all other mid frequencies stay clear and well-defined. These enclosures handle everything we throw at them with absolutely no distortion.”
The Flying Monkey’s new D.A.S. Audio sound system was first placed into service in June 2012 for a performance by rock artists The Royal Southern Brotherhood. Throughout the product selection, design, and installation phases, Agresti reports that D.A.S. Audio provided world-class customer / technical support services. “D.A.S. Audio’s customer service has been immediately responsive to all of our needs,” he said. “A company representative called to verify that we received everything, asked if we had any questions, verified everything was working correctly, and they continue to check in to ensure all our requirements have been met. In my book, that’s an A++ rating.”
Before turning his focus to other company business, Agresti summed up his experience with the D.A.S. equipment at The Flying Monkey, “We love the D.A.S. system at The Flying Monkey. We work with many national touring acts that have used just about every conceivable audio system out there. We’re constantly being told they feel the sound at The Flying Monkey is some of the best they’ve encountered. The feedback from the Monkey patrons is just as positive, with many saying, ‘in their opinion, it’s the best sounding venue in the region.’ As The Flying Monkey expands its lineup for 2013, we look forward for the chance to utilize the D.A.S. system to its full potential. This was a very gratifying project and all of us at K Production Services hope to continue our success by installing more D.A.S. equipment in some of our other venues as well.”
