Los Angeles, CA – October 2012… Billed as the “largest celebration of the Virgin Mary in a generation,” approximately 75,000 believers descended upon the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Sunday afternoon, August 5th, to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe, the long-revered symbol of the Mexican Catholic Church. Providing sound reinforcement for an event of this magnitude requires a sizeable quantity of loudspeakers with great sound quality plus solid throw and horizontal dispersion characteristics. That’s why Huntington Beach, CA-based 7F Audio deployed loudspeakers from the Aero Series 2 and Road catalogs of Valencia, Spain-based D.A.S. Audio.
Luis Muñoz, Owner of 7F Audio, discussed the project, “This event was sponsored by the Knights of Columbus in conjunction with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the Instituto Superior de Estudios Guadalupanos and, each year, it attracts a huge crowd. The event was produced for the Knights of Columbus by Michael Macari from EVTV, which is based in Stamford, CT and locally, by John Semerdjian from Watermark Event Management.
Filling the LA Coliseum with clear, consistent coverage is no small task. That’s precisely why we deployed a large number of Aero 50 3-way, large format line array enclosures, Aero 12A powered, 2-way mid-high line array elements, as well as Road 12A monitor wedges.
The sound reinforcement system Muñoz and his crew assembled consisted of twelve D.A.S. Aero 50 enclosures plus three Aero 12A’s that served as down fills for each side of the main stage. The primary outfills consisted of another sixteen Aero 50’s—eight enclosures per side. Additionally, eight Aero 12A enclosures per side were deployed for secondary outfills. The D.A.S. Audio Aero 50 is an externally powered, high efficiency line array module that integrates two 15-inch low frequency transducers, four 8-inch transducers for the midrange, and two neodymium compression drivers with 1.5-inch exits for the high frequency. The Aero 12A is a powered system incorporating one 12-inch loudspeaker with a neodymium magnetic assembly and a neodymium compression driver with a 1.5-inch exit. Power is supplied by a 3rd generation Class D system with 500 W for the LF and 100 W for the HF. Subwoofers consisted of six dual 18-inch enclosures of a proprietary design.
Onstage, there were four Aero 12A enclosures per side for sidefills and another four Aero 12A’s positioned across the front of the stage for front fill. Eight D.A.S. Audio Road 12A, 2-way stage monitors were also deployed for the event. Positioned approximately 330 feet out from the main stage, the 7F Audio crew placed two delay towers. Each tower consisted of eight Aero 50 enclosures. Crown Audio i-T12000 HD power amps drove the Aero 50 enclosures.
Muñoz discussed his reasons for deploying the D.A.S. Audio system. “I am continually impressed with the sound quality of the D.A.S. Audio Aero Series 2 loudspeakers,” he said. “And for a venue the size of the Coliseum, the Aero 50’s have great throw and broad horizontal dispersion. The system we built provided clear, natural sounding reproduction throughout the audience areas. I was also very impressed with D.A.S. Audio’s customer and technical support services. Carlos Henao was a tremendous resource and actually came on site to help ensure everything went according to plan.”
With this year’s Our Lady of Guadalupe Celebration now in the rear view mirror, Muñoz reports the event was a huge success. “The event featured prayer, music and dance, as well as remarks from Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles and several other religious leaders,” Muñoz reports. “The music sounded terrific through the system and, when people spoke, you could clearly understand every last word. The people who attended were really enthusiastic and complimentary about the quality of the sound they heard.”
