Columbus, Ohio – Hilliard, Ohio’s Fourth of July celebration, dubbed Freedom Fest, brought 25,000 fun seekers out to Roger A. Reynolds Municipal Park to enjoy traditional holiday activities culminating in fireworks and a concert by country music star Rodney Atkins singing his hits over a MODE AUDIO FILA-12.2 line array system.
Pagetech Limited, based in Columbus, Ohio, provided the system. A full production company, Pagetech specializes in large scale live events as well as offering media and video services. Company owner John Page is also the new eastern region distributor for MODE AUDIO products and used this festival as a kick-off to showcase his new FILA-12.2 system.
Eight FILA 12.2 boxes per side were flown, providing ample headroom and coverage for the presenters’ speeches while eight ultra-low, high power BPM–218 subwoofers delivered low frequency material for the concert festivities. MODE AUDIO power amps were used throughout the system.
Commenting on the MODE system, Page said, “I had been renting line array systems consisting of what I’d describe as ‘the usual players’ that were acceptable but not great. When I heard a MODE rig at a demo I said, ‘this is it. I’ve got to go for this.’ What struck me was that it has extreme clarity in the mid–ranges that you don’t often hear. Some companies like to soften those, and softening up lower mid ranges and mid ranges makes some systems sound warm, but I think it lacks clarity. And I can’t overpower it. We turn up the juice on it and it gets loud, but it’s still clear.”
The FILA-12.2 is true three-way line array loudspeaker that features two proprietary LSM® high frequency line source wave horns, each fitted with a 2″ exit highly engineered neodymium HF compression driver. The MF of the FILA-12.2 loudspeaker is comprised of four 6″ neodymium woofers with DECA® (Distortion – Elimination – Correction – Analysis) technology that are mounted on a mid-phase plug panel which produces a very unique clear and powerful MF response. The LF of the FILA-12.2 loudspeaker, one of the most powerful true low frequency responding loudspeakers in the industry, is designed with two separate LF chambers that are fitted with a 12″ long excursion neodymium woofer each. The sub cabinets each house dual high power 18″ neodymium speakers.
Jeff Hawkins is FOH engineer for the featured act, Rodney Atkins. He had a very good day on the MODE system saying, “This was my first experience on the PA and I really enjoyed working on it.When I arrived at the site the main hang was 8 over 4 and I had the MODE team move the 4 subs that were located under the main hang and spread them out every 4 ft or so to steer the low end in a cardioid pattern. It was a big show and the PA handled just fine. I EQ’d to my taste and found that it was plenty loud and transparent. I’m looking forward to using it again.”
