Los Angeles, CA… On Thursday evening, August 8th, Universal Mastering Studios—the world-class facility where many of music’s greatest recordings come to life—played host to a very special listening event featuring inspired performances of classical pianist Yana Reznik and the Miles Mosley jazz trio. Co-hosted by Royer Labs and its sibling company Mojave Audio, the SAE Institute, and Delta H Design, Inc., the program was attended by many of the recording industry’s most notable figures and served as a terrific opportunity to hear a variety of contrasting music performances captured with the universally acclaimed microphones of Royer Labs and Mojave Audio.
The evening featured two performance sets for each artist and provided the roughly eighty attendees a chance to mingle and listen without encountering overcrowding. For Ms. Reznik, a Steinway grand piano was brought in specifically for the evening, with the upright bass and drum kit of the Miles Mosley performers completing the setup in Studio A. Here, the arsenal of Royer Labs and Mojave Audio microphones included a lone Royer SF-24V stereo vacuum tube ribbon mic during Ms. Reznik’s performances while the Miles Mosley setup utilized two MA-300’s on the piano, an MA-301fet on the kick drum, the Royer SF-24V as the drum overhead, and a combination of a Mojave MA-300 plus a Royer R-122V vacuum tube mic positioned for the upright bass. Attendees listened to the performances in the adjoining and slightly smaller Studio B while watching the performances on a large, hi-def video display.
Pete Doell, Mastering Engineer at Universal Mastering Studios and a 15-year veteran from Capitol Recording Studios, was on hand throughout the evening to both assist and answer attendees’ questions about the facilities. He offered his perspective on the event, “It was a real treat to have such as star-studded cast of NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences) producer / engineer attendees come to our rather unique space and have the opportunity to hear some exceptional performances captured with some truly wonderful microphones. We were thrilled to host this event and I feel it was a terrific opportunity for people to hear these great Royer and Mojave mics in our space. I believe everyone was thrilled to hear both the classical artistry of pianist Yana Reznik as well as the very, very talented Miles Mosley jazz trio. It was a treat to be part of this event and I genuinely believe that a good time was had by all!”
Engineer / producer Tommy Vicari, whose credits are legendary in the industry and include work on this summer’s hit movie Man of Steel, The 85th Annual Academy Awards for TV, plus countless recordings, including artists Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, and George Duke to name but a few, is a big fan of both Royer and Mojave microphones. He offered his thoughts on the microphones used to capture the performances. “I love Royer ribbons—particularly for use with big bands—which I use regularly for my TV and film work,” he said. “At this point, I have eleven of them. I’ve also become very fond of the Mojave Audio microphones—the MA-200 in particular. I’ve been working with the Mojave mics for about three years, which I use in place of some old vintage mics, and they’re really, really great. Tonight’s get together is a terrific opportunity for everyone to hear what these mics are capable of.”
Universal Mastering Studios was the ideal location for the listening event. The rooms have been acoustically designed by Culver City, CA-based Delta H Design, Inc. and exhibit the most balanced, articulate, and natural listening environment one can imagine. Hanson Hsu, the firm’s Principal, was on hand and shared his perspective. “Besides the obvious networking opportunities for everyone here tonight, this event was a way for us to evaluate ZR Acoustics® in both a symmetrical and asymmetrical fashion: can acoustic resolution exceed the audible threshold of audible geometries. In other words, can Extreme Acoustic Resolution allow one air volume to work as both a live room and a control room? Tonight’s program shows that it can. From an electronics perspective, the industry is constantly innovating, but acoustics hasn’t necessary followed—until now. With the advent of ZR Acoustics, we dramatically improve the listening environment and now create multi-use acoustical spaces with one design: Mastering, Mix, and Tracking with one quantum acoustics paradigm. Tonight’s event gave the pro audio industry a chance to experience this effect. We are all honored to be a sponsor of this auspicious event.”
John Jennings, Royer VP of Sales and Marketing and Dusty Wakeman, President of Mojave Audio, both appeared thrilled with the results of the evening. “This was an outstanding event!” Jennings exclaimed. “We had terrific performances and the opportunity to show what our mics are capable of.” Wakeman concurred, “I’m really pleased with the way it all came together. We had great attendance and, with the gracious support of our co-sponsors, the evening was terrific. I thank everyone involved for the way it all turned out.”
