PreSonus “Power-Up” StudioLive Upgrade Program Saves Customers Big Bucks

[ATTACH=CONFIG]198933.vB5-legacyid=9907[/ATTACH]Baton Rouge, Louisiana, April 2014… PreSonus® announces “Power-Up,” a program that saves first-generation StudioLive™ digital mixer owners up to $1,200 when trading up to a new StudioLive AI-series Active Integration™ digital mixer. The offer starts on April 15 and ends on June 30, 2014.

Customers can save $500 for trading in a StudioLive 16.0.2, $800 for trading in a StudioLive 16.4.2, and $1,200 for trading in a StudioLive 24.4.2 when purchasing any StudioLive AI-series mixer.

To get the full trade-in discount, the old mixer must be in working condition and cosmetically acceptable. If not, PreSonus can repair the mixer, reducing the trade-in discount by the repair cost.

StudioLive AI-series mixers add major new features including:

Who in their right mind, happily working with a SL 16.4.2 in decent nick, is going to accept $800 trade-in, to buy a desk that even at new discounted prices is around $2,000?

Unless the user has a really important and specific need for the marginal improvements represented by the new AI line, I can't really see the attraction of this "deal"?!?

Odd that they're offering $500 for the 16.0.2 in that they did not make an AI version of that...

Apart from the StudioLive mixers, I don't know a lot about their products.

All I have seen is a company that looks out of touch with certain areas of its marketplace.

My guess regarding a lack of an AI version of the 16.0.2 is that the original does not already have sufficient engineering built in, that would allow the upgrade to the AI spec.

As a consumer I have no potential interest in this series of mixing desks. However I worry that the AI loudspeakers that Dave Gunness helped them design will get tarred with the same reputation that results from the StudioLive desks.

Those new AI speakers look like a decent product. Also it's the closest us non-US folks get to the attractive Fulcrum range.

Wouldn't that be the ideal time to make a new version of the 16.0.2? The larger mixers had to have a fairly large engineering change to make it work. Granted, it was a significantly different desk than its larger siblings.

This is why I'm but a consumer and not an engineer...

Actually, the prices they are offering aren't that far off. If you're looking to upgrade/replace the mixer, you have the option of trying to sell it on your own. Currently, used 16.4.2 mixers are going for around $900-1000 on eBay. Instead of the hassle of selling the unit on eBay, you can simply ship it to Presonus. In some business settings, selling used gear isn't an option, and this is a way to get money for existing gear and lower the budget needs for an upgrade.

That was my assumption - ie they were able to economically re-engineer the bigger desks to AI spec, and price them at a cost they anticipate the market will bear.

Due to whatever differences there are under the hood of the original 16.0.2 in comparison with the 16.4.2 & 24.4.2 models - it would have been a relatively bigger job to add the new AI feature-set.

Also as part of this calculation, it may have been determined that the typical user of the smallest model would also be the least likely to utilise the new AI features. Hence some judgement was made that the cost of re-engineering it to the AI spec was too high - in terms of how that cost needs to be passed on to the consumer.

However like you I'm no engineer - thus am indulging in what I normally find irritating, on this otherwise informative forum: idle speculation based on inexpert supposition (sorry folks)!

Now, here's a funny part.

Someone asked in a new thread what happened to the thread about the announcement, not mentioning its content, and I replied it was removed by some administrator.

That post was also removed!!! I'm not impressed.....

Actually this is a very good point I hadn't considered, and an issue I've come across in various environments.

When I was employed by a big company, working in event management administration - we had lots of odd rules and restrictions around purchasing anything on the company credit card, which was the main method of payment for all the transactions I had to process.

Also when I've worked alongside folks employed by local councils, schools, the NHS and charities - they have various different specific and sometimes problematic procurement procedures concerning who was able to supply what, including any pro audio purchasing.

Hence with hindsight I was unreasonably hasty in dismissing this particular offer, as I expect similar issues are experienced by eligible American folks, working in similar environments.

I'm curious as to the fate of the traded in desks? I would be surprised if Presonus did like Yamaha with the M7s they took as trades for new CL consoles, as Presonus would be undermining their own market for their current refreshed range of Studiolives by also offering cheaper 2nd user alternatives (also I notice here bigger pro audio retailers selling discounted stock of non-AI models).

I'd be interested to know from our American cousins, who is buying the refurbished M7CLs? I could imagine a very niche market somewhere for a reliable and respected desk, where the higher channel count takes presidence over having the latest processing and digital connectivity (eg stagebox expandability). Given the relatively expensive nature of Yamaha external stageboxes, plus the cost of the cards needed to use them - adding 48 channels of remote boxes will be uncomfortably close in price to the refurbished desks themselves.
