[B]Sidney Harman[/B] (August 4, 1918 – April 12, 2011) was an American businessman who has been active in education, government, industry, and publishing. He was the Chairman Emeritus of [URL=”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harman_International_Industries”]Harman International Industries[/URL], Inc. Harman served as the [URL=”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Deputy_Secretary_of_Commerce”]U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce[/URL] in 1977 and 1978. As of August 2010 Harman was also the publisher of [I][URL=”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newsweek”]Newsweek[/URL][/I]. Harman died on April 12, 2011 of complications from acute myeloid leukemia.[SUP][URL=”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidney_Harman#cite_note-0″][1][/URL][/SUP]
Harman was married to [URL=”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jane_Harman”]Jane Harman[/URL] (b. 1945), a former Democratic member of Congress from California who represented [URL=”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California%27s_36th_congressional_district”]California’s 36th congressional district[/URL] which included the [URL=”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redondo_Beach”]Redondo Beach[/URL] and [URL=”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhattan_Beach,_California”]Manhattan Beach[/URL] areas of Southern California.
