what other forums do you read?

I read several other forums and mailing lists, some daily, and some more like weekly. I am curious what other forums people read, both related to event production, and unrelated.

If you know of a good forum for newbie aquarium owners, well, my girlfriend gave me an aquarium for Christmas and I am clueless as to how to take good care of it and get plants, etc. growing.

In addition to the usual suspects, I also read:

* Control Booth (more lighting/theater oriented production forum)

* DJForums.com

* Karaoke-Forum.com

* plus a bunch of open and closed industry mailing lists for my ''day job''

Re: what other forums do you read?

Congrats! Salt or fresh?

I'll check out the forums you mentioned, thanks.

Our aquarium is your basic 25(?) gallon fresh water tank. I started out with five small fish, but two of them (same species) died within a couple of days. The pet store guy did caution me that as many as half the fish might not survive the transition. The others appear healthy, and they seem to play with each-other, and come to the surface whenever a person walks over to the tank (they know they are about to be fed.)

My understanding is that saltwater tanks are more challenging to keep up with. My girlfriend wants to get a larger one eventually; this is supposed to be just to see if we like having it. We've got two cats and two dogs, too; so pets eat up a lot of our time. Working from home when you have a new puppy SUCKS.

Re: what other forums do you read?

I am a Saltwater Fish enthusiast and have had a few tanks in the past. Right now Im setting up a 90G saltwater tank but its on hold as I have other things to spend money on! A saltwater tank will cost more to get up and running. BUT if you set it up right and take your time I find that it actually takes less maintenance. The clean up crews (shrimp, crabs, snails etc) plus the bacteria on the rocks and in the sand take care of almost all the cleaning in my tanks. A 10% water changer ever other week and thats about it. Or course Temperature, salinity, and lighting all becomes more important and needs to be checked. A good forum for saltwater at least is:

forums.saltwaterfish.com and just saltwaterfish.com is the store part.

Re: what other forums do you read?

I found myself in an interesting situation earlier this evening. I had: three different professional audio forums open each in a different tab, the Avid Audio forum in a tab, and I was reading my email in another reading the theatre sound listerv. I had to ask myself, ''how many damn audio forums do I need open at any one time''?

In addition to those, I also read (usually in this order):

Sax On the Web forums

qrz.com

The AK Forum

OK Shooters

Appleseed Project forums

m1911.org

John Sayers'

and Rational Acoustics

Re: what other forums do you read?

ControlBooth

SynAudCon (Recently added forum option to the listserve)

ChurchSoundCheck (Also just added a forum option)

ChurchMediaNet

Green Room (Community theatre forum, not a very active forum)

Theatre Sound List

Re: what other forums do you read?

Industry related:

www.blue-room.org.uk

It's got more of a theatrical focus but there is a good amount of pro audio chat there. Most posters are in the UK, with a sizable minority from the colonies.

I subscribe to ChurchSoundCheck but find it a bit of a slog to read through the digests. I'll check out the forum now that they offer it.

Thanks Brad for reminding me that I need to renew my SynAudCon subscription.

Re: what other forums do you read?

Sawmillcreek.org - fantastic woodworking site

festoolownersgroup.com - a hobby not quite as expensive as audio, but close

Sonikmatter.com - Home of my beloved Kurzweil gear

practicalmachinist.com - haven't ever posted anything, but have learned a lot by lurking.

Yeah those Festool prices are right out there, as nice as the products are. Especially if it's for a hobbyist and you're not making a living off them (and expensing the cost on your tax return).

Usual progression for me:

1. Gosh that XYZ Festool is 2.5X the cost of mainstream brands. You've got to be kidding me!?

2. Read about what they can do on FestoolOwnersGroup.com

3. Buy one to ''test'' it

4. Become ruined forever for that particular tool

5. Sell non-Festool tool that I just replaced to get it out of the shop

6. Anxiously watch FestoolOwnersGroup for the next way-too-expensive-but-must-have-it-anyway tool.

The track saw has changed my life. I also have the Domino, which is just as revolutionary, just not used quite as often in my usual projects. I've got a T15+3 drill, and am saving for a vac and Rotex.

Skip the aquarium, go for a pond!

I do have a small coy pond(?) near my front steps. This past spring/summer, it picked up some algae and tadpoles, which later grew into frogs. My girlfriend wanted me to clean it out, but I refused, saying the frogs would eat the bumble bees that are normally attracted to the nearby bushes. It turned out that I was right. Those frogs did a great job of eating all the bees. I hope they survive the winter.
