Looking for a new case for mics plenty of DI's.

A friend of mine just got an SKB 3i case that fits 16 and has an area for DI's accessories. I'm not a big SKB fan, but I REALLY liked this case.

Before jumping to this case, any other favorites? Pelican? Bubble wrap?

Re: Mic case

Keep the mic bags that come with most mics, and get a Pelican 1510 (or it's Storm Cases equal). Remove as much foam as necessary to accommodate your mics.

Oh, the Pelican-type cases have wheels

This is what I do for touring. Mics can fly onboard with me(security loves them), and it's easy to move around. It weighs 40lbs fully loaded, and I mean fully loaded.

Re: Mic case

I do both EWI and Pelican. I'm not a bar provider and each gig has very different needs.

I have one pelican case with most of my DI's (10 type 85, 6 imps, and a few AV DI's and other magic boxes). Another pelican case sits empty waiting to be filled up for smaller gigs with mics and DI's.

My mics are in three EWI cases and broken down into quasi-useable kits. Each has subtle variations (Ie one is mostly Shure, another has more Audix) and on last one has all the odd ball mics. For medium stuff I'll send out one EWI case with an appropriate number of DI's thrown in, for big stuff I'll bring both kits plus the full DI kit, and for small crap I grab whatever they need and throw it in the pelican case.

For rentals, checking the contents of of 30 bags one by one sucks! With the EWI kit I can glance at it and check the few bags in the side compartment as I grab the DI's to return to their home.

Seems to work for me. For flying I agree Pelican is the only option, but I guess I'm trying to suggest that it doesn't have to be all one or the other and should be based on your application.

If you only have 16 mics and a few DI's I'd like to congratulate you on fighting the mic addiction.

Best of luck!

Re: Mic case

I purchased a molded handgun case from a local sporting goods store. It was a large, deep, two layer model with strong latches. Right now I think I have about 12 mics in it with room for about 6 more.

Re: Mic case

For my use, theirs something to be said about being able to inventory at a glance what you have, not only for the setup but for the strike as well. My vote is for the SKB or a Pelican/Storm with the mic cutouts.

Re: Mic case

It's convenient to have a case just for mics without pouches for many reasons. However, I will simply say that if you go with a pelican, you can fit more additional odds and ends in a case with less wasted space and weight, and that makes your life easier. That said, they're all very similar and it's up to your taste in the end.

Re: Mic case

Let your work flow drive your choices. Are you on the road with local crews setting & striking the stage? Get a case with easy to identify slots for each mic in drawers or trays. You'll be much more likely to have all your mics at the next stop. Are your's the only hands on the mics and is it your back that lifts that case every show? Pelicans and mic bags can be smaller & lighter.

Re: Mic case

I use a Hardigg Storm Case with a Penn Elcom M6001 foam insert.

How come no one has told the OP to change his name? That is invariably the first post in situations like this.

We have always carried our mics in wooden Ata style cases that are not water tight. I have recently bought a few inexpensive SKB briefcases that seem to work pretty well, but it worries me that as they are water tight the mic internal windscreen foam and diaphragms may not dry out after use and everything inside the case will rust.

Is this a problem? Do you use some kind of reuseable desicate dehumidifier as we do in our console cases?

Re: Mic case

This has never been an issue for me, but the case is either emptied after a local show. It does go on tour for 5-6 weeks at a time, but if there is foam not drying out, its effects haven't manifested in a way that I have noticed.
